Celtics Trade Jrue Holiday to Trailblazers For Anfernee Simons and Second Round Picks

He helped his team win a championship just a season ago, but now he heads back to Portland. With the NBA draft looming franchises are reviewing their rosters feverishly to see how they may improve. Well, Boston is deciding to bring in more youth and Portland is seeking more veteran experience (and defense), as well as champion influence. On Monday night both organizations made their move official; the Celtics trade Jrue Holiday to the Trailblazers for Anfernee Simons and second round picks.

As one can see, it is shaping up to be a very active summer for organizations throughout the league. Monday’s late trade is the Boston Celtics’ first major move. Sending two-time NBA champion and six-time All-Defensive team member Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers for scoring guard Anfernee Simons and picks. ESPN’s Shams Charania broke the news on the sudden Boston and Portland trade. Charania reports,

“BREAKING: The Boston Celtics have traded Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers for Anfernee Simons and two second-round picks, sources tell ESPN.

Portland makes an aggressive move to re-acquire Holiday, who the franchise originally received from Milwaukee in the Damian Lillard trade in 2023 and later moved to Boston for a deal that included two first-round picks to Blazers. Simons joins Boston on an expiring contract.

An extremely active offseason begins for the Celtics with the trade of Jrue Holiday, who played a critical role in Boston’s 2024 NBA championship. The Celtics remain engaged in trade talks surrounding multiple key players on the roster, sources said.”

NBA reporter Jake Fischer provided a few additional details. Such as what other teams had interest in Holiday as well as the picks Boston will be receiving. And if the Trailblazers have an inkling to flip Jrue.

Fischer mentions, “The Celtics are getting a 2030 Knicks second-rounder and a 2031 Blazers second-rounder from Portland in addition to Anfernee Simons, per source, all in exchange for Jrue Holiday. There was interest in Jrue Holiday from Sacramento, Dallas and others. The plan, for now, is definitely for Portland to keep the veteran point guard, sources say, as the Blazers look to compete in the Western Conference. I’ve seen some wondering whether or not POR would flip him.”

Very interesting. And it looks like Boston is only getting started. Will be intriguing to see over the next several weeks what additional moves the Celtics make.
