The WNBA is hot. And team ownership is the new wave for athletes to make some serious coin (just ask Tom Brady). Well, now the Boston Celtics Jayson Tatum is teaming up with billionaires on a WNBA St. Louis expansion team.

The league has already expressed interest in enlarging and expansion. In 2024, the WNBA not only revealed that the W will have a team in northern California; the Golden State Valkyries. But also Toronto will be getting a franchise as well. Regarding these moves, FOS reports: The two Golden State teams will share the Chase Center in San Francisco. Earlier this year, teams in Toronto and Portland were announced, with both set to join by 2026. The Toronto team will be owned by Kilmer Sports Ventures, led by Toronto-based billionaire Larry Tanenbaum.

However, the W’s commissioner wants to go a step further. And is hoping to tack on yet another expansion team in the next three years. In fact, the WNBA is looking and aiming to add another expansion team before the 2028 season. The WNBA League commissioner Cathy Engelbert said she’d like to see a 16th team in place by the 2028 season.

Well, with all of this in play, it makes sense why others would like to get in on the “expanding” party. And Jayson Tatum is coming together with some other heavy pocket investors in order to put in a bid for his hometown city. According to NBC Sports,

“The Boston Celtics star has “informally agreed” to invest in a bid led by billionaires Richard Chaifetz and David Hoffman to bring a WNBA expansion franchise to St. Louis.

If the bid comes to fruition, Tatum could be the first active NBA player to have ownership stake in a WNBA franchise after the NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement (ratified in April 2023) allowed players to own up to 4 percent of WNBA teams.”

With athletes steadily joining and getting into the WNBA ownership scene. It is only helping to prove that not only is the WNBA good for business; but so is women’s sports in general. This sector is growing and growing rapidly and several wealthy entities and individuals want a piece of the money pie.
