Cavs Star James Harden Plans to Play Through His Fractured Right Thumb
To play, or not to play. That indeed was the question. Well, Cleveland’s newest addition has decided he’s not going to let a setback keep from doing his job on court. After seeing a hand specialist Cavs star James Harden plans to play through his fractured right thumb.
Harden had sustained a right thumb fracture in Tuesday’s game against the New York Knicks. The Cavaliers announced the injury news the following day regarding James in an official statement. The statement read as follows:
“Cavaliers guard James Harden injured his right thumb in last night’s 109-94 win over New York. A postgame examination by the Cavaliers’ medical staff, followed by X-rays taken today, confirmed a non-displaced fracture of the distal phalanx.
Harden will undergo treatment and continued evaluation and will be listed as QUESTIONABLE for tonight’s game against Milwaukee. An update on his status will be provided as appropriate.”

Injury analyst, Jeff Stotts, reported that Harden’s injury being a non-displaced fracture of the distal phalanx was a very good sign. Stotts states,
“James Harden Injury News: The thumb is made up of 2 phalanges. Harden’s break involves the distal phalanx (tip of the thumb) and is non-displaced. This is a best case scenario for a quick return. Players to suffer this injury and avoid surgery miss an average of 6.5 games (~17 days).”
A very good outcome for the Cavs; especially, as the season inches ever closer to the playoffs. But the situation regarding Harden would still improve further; resulting in James missing little to no time at all. While James had been listed as questionable Wednesday against Milwaukee Bucks; by Thursday things had changed.
ESPN’s Shams Charania confirmed on NBA Today that after seeing a hand specialist, Harden plans to tough it out. Even though he didn’t play in Wednesday’s loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, it’s reported that he is planning on playing through the right thumb fracture, and surgery will not be required.
No doubt Cleveland will be happy to have Harden back in action as soon as possible. James was a part of the team’s recent seven game win streak. Additionally, Harden has played seven games with the Cavs. He’s averaging 18.9 points and 8 assists on .494/.488/.867 shooting splits.
