Candace Parker Retires From the WNBA After 16 Seasons

After almost two decades on the court, a legend is waving goodbye. The iconic Candace Parker is retiring from the WNBA after playing 16 wonderful seasons. Dazzling us with her high energy play, immense leadership and slam dunks!

Even while still in college, heck, even in high school; it was clear that Parker was destined to be a star. Parker won back to back Illinois State Women’s Basketball Championships in 2003 and 2004 at Naperville Central HS while being named Gatorade player of the year. Years later, she’s still the only player to win Gatorade National Player Of The Year twice. Both her Junior and Senior years.

Additionally, she is the first female basketball player to dunk in the NCAA Tournament. There’s also highlights of her dunking while with the Sparks. So her dunks weren’t just a flash in the pan.

Nevertheless, her dominance and talent only continues to show throughout her pro basketball career. She leaves the game with one heck of a resume. Her illustrious career includes:

3x WNBA Champ.
2x WNBA MVP.
2x Gold Medalist.
7x WNBA All-Star.
7x All-WNBA First Team.
2020 WNBA DPOY.
2016 WNBA Finals MVP.
2013 WNBA All-Star MVP.
2008 WNBA ROY.
WNBA 25 Team.

Amazing. These are stats that extend from the beginning of her pro career to the very last season! In her final season she wins another championship with the Las Vegas Aces. So then, Candace never once took her foot off the gas. She left it all on the court. And for that, us basketball enthusiasts and fans thank her.

Sports writer, Jemele Hill also had a few words to try and sum up the career of Candace Parker. She states,

“Candace Parker is 1 of 1. It’s almost impossible to explain how dominant she has been for decades, from winning national titles at Tennessee to being the first woman to dunk in the NCAA tournament game to winning WNBA titles with multiple franchises. Still the only WNBA player to win ROY and MVP the same season.

She’s already a successful, astute broadcaster. I would LOVE to see CP become a WNBA owner.

Congratulations on an incredible career.”

Yes, congratulations Candace Parker! It’s been so much fun watching you, season after season. Enjoy retirement and can’t wait to see what WNBA franchise you own in the future.
