Caitlin Clark WNBA Debut is the Most Watched WNBA Game in 23 Years
And another one. Yep, the number one overall draft pick is still up to her record breaking ways. The Caitlin Clark WNBA debut is now the most watched WNBA game in 23 years!
This moment is literally two decades in the making and it is glorious. Well… just about. Unfortunately, last night, Clark did not have her best game.
In her college days we are used to Clark dominating and putting up almost 40 a game. However, last night she was held to just 20 points (which is still very nice); but for Clark, who is THAT good; feels like “underachieving.” The Indiana Fever would go on to lose their first game of the season. Being defeated by the Connecticut Sun, 71-92.
However, even as the Fever fell farther behind the Sun. It did not prevent people from tuning in or continuing to watch. People stayed locked on the game. With viewership peaking at 2.11 million viewers.
Therefore, there is a real silver lining when it comes to Caitlin’s first game as professional basketball player. While fans may not be too happy about a loss. It is obvious there is still plenty of fan support and interest surrounding Clark. So that, when she does eventually settle in and turn on the jets; there will be millions of viewers ready, and chopping at the bit to take in the show.

Speaking of viewers, what was the audience like for most of Caitlin’s big WNBA debut? Sports Business Journal writer, Austin Karp reports:
“The debut of CaitlinClark with the Indiana Fever drew 2.1 million viewers on ESPN2 on Tuesday night. Easily marking a WNBA record for any ESPN/ABC/ESPN2 game and the best game for the WNBA since May 2001 on NBC.”
Wild. Moreover, Sports business professional, Joe Pompliano added:
“Caitlin Clark’s WNBA debut averaged 2.1 million viewers on ESPN2 last night. That’s more viewers than two NBA Christmas Day games last year, and it’s the most-watched WNBA game in over 20 years. A massive number.”
Nice. With the WNBA doing numbers, this may help sports networks like ESPN to be more willing to broadcast women’s basketball games. So far, there are plenty of games that will not be televised this year; therefore, there is some room for improvement in this area. However, with the record numbers continuing from college hoops into the WNBA; we are sure ESPN will at least give this matter some consideration.
