Busy Day In NFL As Roster Cuts Have Been Determined

It’s never a pleasant time for players to wait and see if they made the cut. But the agony is over and fates have been sealed. It was a busy day in the NFL as roster cuts have now been determined. There were far too many moves made to cover them all so here are a few notes that I found interesting.

He was mentioned in our preseason notes and we thought he had a good chance of making the roster. And that’s what Tony Jefferson did, as of now he is with the San Diego Chargers. And so is Brendan Rice, the son of former super star wide receiver Jerry Rice.

Former Atlanta Falcons QB Desmond Ridder was cut by the Arizona Cardinals. Ridder may not be starting QB material. But he likely would have been a better backup option than Clayton Tune. Veteran wide receiver Tim White was cut by the Denver Broncos. But it didn’t take long for the Detroit Lions to snatch him up. He’ll be on the Lion’s practice squad while he gets up to speed on their system.

Then there are the guys who are on the team but not taking up a roster spot. Adam Schefter reported: “Dolphins moved wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., linebacker Bradley Chubb, linebacker Cameron Goode and offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn to the reserve/physically unable to perform list.”

Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb will miss at least the first four games of the season. Chubb will start the season on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported Monday. D’Onta Foreman’s contract was terminated leaving only two running backs on Cleveland’s roster. That’s curious as they kept four quarterbacks for now.

Recently the Patriots traded Matthew Judon to the Atlanta Falcons. Now they have placed DT Christian Barmore on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury List (designated to return). So they will be opening their season without two key defensive players.

The Kansas City Chiefs waived Kadarius Toney which wasn’t surprising. Injuries and declining production ended his time there. But it was a little sad to know that running back Louis Rees-Zammit was cut. He is the rugby player from Gloucester and a part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway program.

Of course teams will continue to tweak their rosters so nothing is final yet. However, in a little over a week the official regular season kicks off. So we’ll see how it all shakes out soon.
