And then there were three. The number of open head coaching positions has rapidly dwindled since the regular season ended. We started with ten and now we’re down to three, thanks to Buffalo. The Buffalo Bills stay in-house and hire OC Joe Brady to be the new head coach. Brady joined the Bills in 2002 and served as quarterback coach to Josh Allen. Then he was promoted to offensive coordinator (2024-2025) and now will serve as the head coach. The Bills made the announcement today that they agreed to terms on a five-year deal with Brady. He will become the 21st head coach of the franchise.

Brady is known for dialing up tough offenses to counteract whatever type of defense they may face. In 2025 the Bills’ offense ranked top five in multiple categories: rushing yards per game (159.6 – 1st), time of possession (33:08 – 1st), red zone efficiency (66.2% – 3rd), points per game (28.3 – 4th), total yards per game (376.3 – 4th) and third down conversion rate (44.8% – 4th). And they rewrote the record book becoming the first team in NFL history to score at least 30 rushing and 30 receiving touchdowns in a single season. The Bills averaged 30.9 points per game (best in AFC) and allowed a league-best 14 sacks that season.

But despite the high-flying offense some still question the hiring of Brady who was a member of former coach Sean McDermott’s staff. Especially after owner Terry Pegula seriously questioned the former coaching staff. He made it known that he didn’t want wide receiver Keon Coleman, that it was the coaching staff that wanted him. So why hire someone from that same staff to be the new head coach? It’s kind of a head scratcher.

Brady will now have to work with general manager Brandon Beane who held onto his job as McDermott was let go. The Bills had become one of the most successful offenses under McDermott’s tenure. But Pegula felt the team had hit the proverbial playoff wall. Therefore, Brady will have a tough job ahead of him getting the Bills and quarterback Josh Allen over the playoff hump. It would seem that the Bills would have wanted to go outside the building to find someone to make that happen.

On the other hand, unretired quarterback Philip Rivers did have an interview last Friday for the Bills’ head coach position. He said he was open to the idea of coaching in the NFL. So that potential outsider is no longer a possibility. Which is probably a good thing since he had no NFL head coaching experience anyway.

So for now, we will wish many congratulations and successes to new Bills head coach Joe Brady!
