Buffalo Bills Parted Ways With Five Veteran Players

As the offseason continues to roll along more news keeps coming out. Yesterday afternoon the Buffalo Bills parted ways with five of their veteran players. One of the noteworthy releases is probably that of safety Justin Poyer. However, the other players released were center Mitch Morse, defensive back Siran Neal, wide receiver Deonte Harty and running back Nyheim Hines. Some are saying that cornerback Tre’Davious White is also being released. At this time the team has not made that announcement.

Furthermore, Micah Hyde is a free agent and could sign elsewhere. Or at 33 he may decide to retire, especially since he dealt with a surgically-repaired neck last season. If that happens then the Bills will lose the safety tandem of Poyer and Hyde. They have worked together for the past seven years. They contributed to the run of success experienced by the Buffalo Bills defense. But releasing Jordan Poyer frees up $7.5 million in salary cap space. And the Bills are about $40 million over the salary cap. Hence the cutting of so many veteran players.

At any rate, the Bills are losing a lot of veteran leadership. It remains to be seen how this void will affect the team next season. In 2023, both Poyer and Hyde were named captains for the fourth and third consecutive season, respectively. When they arrived at the Bills in 2017 they helped to establish a winning culture with their leadership. It will be difficult for the team to replace that kind of leadership particularly since the Bills appear to be trending younger. But due to the salary cap issue they don’t have much choice.

Besides Poyers release, they moved on from center Mitch Morse. He also was a team captain in 2022 and 2023 and allowed the fewest sacks on the offensive line in 2023. However, with his release they save $8.5 million but they lose a dependable piece of their offensive line. Running back Nyheim Hines missed the 2023 season due to a leg injury and is set to enter his sixth season. Defensive back Siran Neal spent six years with Buffalo and a was special teams gunner. Wide receiver Deonte Harty spent one season with the Bills total 15 catches, 150 yards and one touchdown. He also returned 26 punts and racked up 323 yards and a touchdown.

According to ESPN.com the Bills are restructuring the contracts of pass rusher Von Miller and cornerback Rasul Douglas. This will help get them where they need to be with the salary cap. And then make some moves in free agency.
