Buffalo Bills Banged On The Denver Broncos In Wild Card
The Denver Broncos traveled to Buffalo as underdogs against the Bills. Buffalo’s offense has been pretty dynamic for the most part this season. However, they didn’t look as effective or efficient in the first half of the game. But in the end the Buffalo Bills banged on the Denver Broncos in day 2 of the Wild Card playoffs.
The Broncos made a splash coming out to begin the game. They went 7 plays and 70 yards culminating with a 43-yard touchdown bomb from Bo Nix to Troy Franklin. Buffalo responded with some impressive, angry running from James Cook. But in the red zone, Josh Allen had back-to-back incompletions so the Bills settled for a 26-yard field goal. The Bills’ defense forced a quick three and out which included a sack of Bo Nix. And their offense went on a 15 play 7:35 drive which ended with a 5-yard touchdown run by James Cook. On the next Broncos drive they were 4th & 8 at DEN 43. They set up for the punt but punter Riley Dixon threw a pass to Marvin Mims and converted the fourth down. However, they still had to punt a few plays later.
Buffalo then went on a 14 play drive that only netted 44 yards. They had a couple of false start penalties along with an eight yard sack of Allen. So after eating up 6:36 of the clock they had to punt again. With just under two minutes left in the half the Broncos started from their 8 yard line moving the ball quickly 55 yards. Nix hit Courtland Sutton for a 21-yard reception putting them in field goal range. However, the kick hit the right upright and the 50 yard field goal attempt was no good. At halftime the score was 7-10, Buffalo.
Buffalo Bills Banged On The Denver Broncos In Wild Card
Buffalo opened the second half with an effective drive that included a 25 yard pass and 19 yard run. However, it appeared the officials missed what should have been a holding call on the Broncos in the endzone. The Bills kicked a 27-yard field goal. Denver couldn’t pick up a first down as Nix and Franklin couldn’t connect and they punted. When the Bills got the ball back Ray Davis was injured on a helmet to helmet hit by Brandon Jones incurring a 15-yard penalty on the Broncos. It was a defenseless receiver unnecessary roughness call. Allen later found Ty Johnson for a great throw and catch in the end zone for the 24 yard touchdown and the 2-pt. conversion.
The Broncos were held scoreless in the second half while the Bills scored another touchdown in a little over three minutes. And for good measure they tacked on another field goal of 34 yards. After a shaky start the Bills seemed to shake off their nerves and played more like they had all season.
Denver Gets Spanked By Buffalo In The Playoffs
Denver head coach Sean Payton’s postseason record was 0-8 when trailing at halftime. And now he adds another loss to the stat. I had to remind myself that Bo Nix was a rookie this year. He played with poise and didn’t panic although he did make a few rookie mistakes. However, they weren’t anything egregious and he no doubt gained a lot of experience from this playoff game. Look for the Broncos to be even better next season.
With this victory the Bills will face off against the Baltimore Ravens next week. The Ravens beat them in Week 4, 10-35; so getting revenge will probably be on their minds.
