Buccaneers Signed General Manager and Head Coach To Extensions
For the past five straight seasons the team has clinched a playoff berth, the longest such stretch in franchise history. And with so many good things happening for them, they want to keep the good times rolling. Therefore, on Thursday, the Buccaneers announced that both General Manager Jason Licht and Head Coach Todd Bowles have been signed to multi-year contract extensions. General manager Jason Licht joined the team in 2014. After serving three years as defensive coordinator, Todd Bowles became the head coach in 2022.
The Buccaneers have had many vaunted defenses over the years. And when Licht was instrumental in bringing former quarterback Tom Brady to the team in 2020 their offense improved. They claimed their second Super Bowl championship at the end of the 2020 season. Since Bowles has been the head coach, he has guided the team to three straight division titles. A first for a Buccaneers head coach.
The team released a statement regarding the extensions for the two:
“Jason and Todd’s excellent leadership and vision have been critical to our organizational success, and the winning culture they have established has us well positioned into the future,” said Buccaneers Owner/Co-Chairman Joel Glazer. “Jason has evolved into one of the top talent evaluators and general managers in the NFL, while Todd has led us to three consecutive division titles and is one of the league’s leading defensive minds. Under their guidance, we will continue building towards another championship.”
After Brady’s retirement the team took a risk on Baker Mayfield and it has paid off. As pointed out by nfl.com, “Mayfield’s production has been so significant, each of the quarterback’s last two offensive coordinators (Dave Canales and Liam Coen) have been hired as head coaches elsewhere.”

Thanks to Licht’s drafting prowess, they have drafted 38 players in Rounds One through Six in the 2019-24 drafts, and all of them were on NFL rosters during the 2024 season. No other team in the league can claim the same 100% success rate in that span. Bowles has done his part as well. The Buccaneers have won 27 regular-season games under his guidance, the second most for a head coach in his first three seasons in franchise history, after former head coach Bruce Arians’ 31.
So it’s not surprising that the team chose to keep their general manager and head coach in place. They’ve got a good thing going and now we’ll see if they can maintain or improve their winning ways. Congrats to both Licht and Bowles on their new contract extensions!
