Buccaneers Moved Quickly To Fill Offensive Coordinator Job
After having lost Liam Coen to the Jacksonville Jaguars he needed to be replaced. So the Tampa Bay Buccaneers moved quickly to fill the offensive coordinator job. Six different candidates were interviewed for the position between Saturday and Tuesday. Coen had been named the head coach of the Jaguars last Friday. And today the Buccaneers announced that they have promoted Josh Grizzard to the OC role after he spent one season as the team’s pass game coordinator.
Grizzard worked closely in 2024 with offensive coordinator Liam Coen. They put together an attack that proved to be one of the most productive in franchise history. According to the team website Grizzard will be the fourth different offensive coordinator the Buccaneers have employed in the last four years. However, while Coen – and before him in 2023, Dave Canales – were new to the organization and had different schemes to install, Grizzard should offer continuity as well as fresh ideas.
Buccaneers Head Coach Todd Bowles said that the internal hire was best for the team:
“Josh is bright and innovative and was instrumental in our game planning and play design over the last year. After interviewing several outstanding candidates throughout this process, it ultimately became clear that our best option was here in our building. We had a lot of success offensively last season. And during our conversations, Grizz provided some great ideas on how we can build on that. His familiarity with our offense, our players and the staff will ensure the continuity that is crucial for sustained success.”
Continuity is always helpful to a team. But for quarterback Baker Mayfield, this will be his ninth play-caller since entering the league in 2018. And yet he produced his best season in 2024. He set career highs with 4,500 passing yards, 41 touchdown passes, a 71.4% completion percentage and a passer rating of 106.8.

Grizzard had 11 years of coaching experience when he joined the Buccaneers in 2024. He spent seven of those with the Miami Dolphins. Under his tenure they had a most productive season in 2023. Miami ranked first in yards per game (401.3), passing yards per game (265.5) and yards per carry (5.1). And they finished second in points per game (29.2), yards per play (6.5) and yards per pass attempt (8.0).
Grizzard helped Tampa’s offense reach several statistical milestones, working with every aspect of the passing game including assisting with quarterbacks, wide receivers, tight ends and running backs. He even looked at league tendencies to implement into the gameplan to maximize the club’s personnel. So overall this promotion seems to be a good idea. We’ll see if Grizzard can keep the offensive train moving next season.
