Buccaneers And Baker Mayfield Have A Decision To Make

He’s been a lot of places and seen a lot of things. And now after a pretty good season, the Buccaneers and Baker Mayfield have a big decision to make. Will he stay or will he go? Or will they keep him or let him go? A franchise quarterback is a must have for every NFL team. When Mayfield was drafted by Cleveland they thought they had that. However, they traded him away in the summer of 2022.

Of course, the Cleveland Browns had been nothing but inconsistent with their constant coaching changes. Mayfield had endured four head coach changes during his tenure with the Browns. Then in the 2022 off-season, the Browns traded for Deshaun Watson. Prompting Mayfield to request a trade which was granted.

He was traded to the Carolina Panthers and was named the starting quarterback. Due to a high ankle sprain he missed a few weeks and lost the starting job. During his short time with the Panthers he again dealt with a head coach being fired and replaced with an interim coach.

After requesting to be released from the Panthers he was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Rams in December 2022. He was with them for five games. In March 2023 he landed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He had a good season, leading the Buccaneers to the playoffs, clinching the NFC South title. That was also his first time winning a division title. Mayfield is happy with Tampa and wants to stay with the team.

However, lost his offensive coordinator Dave Canales, who is now the head coach of the Carolina Panthers. He was replaced with Liam Coen. In addition, the team has not reached a contract deal with top notch receiver Mike Evans.

But still the quarterback had this to say on the matter: “It’s meant the world to me just to be able to be in a stable place, to be the best version of myself [and] to [do] what they’ve enabled me to do,” Mayfield said. “The organization, the staff, our locker room — it’s just a special place, so I’ve truly appreciated it. I hope the guys know that. I try to reflect that with just who I am every day coming to work, bringing energy and passion into it.”

Of course it all comes down to money, so working out a contract is paramount. But staying in Tampa will surely give Mayfield the stability he craves. Here’s hoping he can finally put down some roots.
