Bryson DeChambeau Holds Off Rory McIlroy Winning His Second Career US Open
When the door opens, you must take full advantage. And that’s exactly what went down between two athletes this weekend. Bryson DeChambeau holds off Rory McIlroy winning his second career US Open.
DeChambeau’s big win comes four years after he won the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot. It also is following his sixth-place finish at this year’s Masters and runner-up at the PGA Championship; where he finished a stroke behind Xander Schauffele.
Bryson’s excitement could barely be contained after his thrilling finish at the 124th U.S. Open. Especially, since there was so much meaning behind this one. And he did not want to experience a repeat of what happened at PGA.
DeChambeau may not have played his best, but it was enough to get the job done. Bryson defeats Rory McIlroy by 1 stroke. Rory McIlroy “took his foot off the gas” and bogeyed three of his final four holes, thus coming in second. Regarding his performance DeChambeau says,
“I’m so happy I got that shot up-and-down on 18. Oh, man, I didn’t want to finish second again. PGA really stung. Xander played magnificent. I wanted to get this one done, especially at such a special place that means so much to me, SMU, my dad, what Payne meant to him, 1,000th USGA championship. Stack them on top. That bunker shot was the shot of my life!”
If you are curious about the SMU history that Bryson is referring to in his statement above. It was 25 years ago that the late, great Payne Stewart, also an SMU graduate, won the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. That year, Stewart won with a score of 1 under. Nevertheless, now DeChambeau brings home the trophy on Father’s Day with a winning score of 6 under, beating Rory McIlroy by one shot with a dramatic par save on the 72nd hole.
Additionally, Bryson is dedicating this win to his fans, Payne and his father. Bryson’s father sadly passed away in 2022; after battling multiple health issues. On Instagram, DeChambeau mentions,
“This one was for my fans, Payne, and my dad.
Without a doubt, this was one of the most meaningful weeks of my life. Having all of the support from everyone out on course and around the world is definitely something I will cherish forever and never forget. I cannot thank my team, my family, my fans, and the game of golf enough for allowing these kind of moments to happen.
This is only the beginning to a long story that has yet to be written. See you all at the next one!”

So then, it was a great day for DeChambeau, but unfortunately, more heartbreak for Rory. With his playing Rory left the door open for Bryson. And DeChambeau did not let the opportunity pass him by.
Golf and sports enthusiast Daniel Rapaport summed it all up best. He states,
“That sound the crowd made after Rory missed will haunt my dreams.
Just an incredible Sunday of golf that we’re all lucky to have witnessed. Elation for Bryson, who’s completed a turnaround for the ages. Heartbreak for Rory who will have a hard time forgetting those putts on 16 and 18. Brutal game. Amazing game.”
Yes, it was indeed great. Very entertaining. Congratulations again to Bryson DeChambeau on being a U.S. Open winner for the second time in five years.
