Bruce Meyer Unanimously Elected Executive Director of the Major League Baseball Players Association
Well, that was fast and thank goodness. After some revelations hit earlier in the week leading to the resignation of Tony Clark. Now an interim replacement is ready and in place. Bruce Meyer has been unanimously elected as executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association.
In case you missed it, let’s recap this week’s events:
- Tony Clark set to resign
- Clark releases resignation statement
- Internal investigation revealed Clark had an inappropriate relationship with his sister-in-law
- Tony’s resignation occurred as Eastern District of New York was also conducting an investigation into alleged financial improprieties at the union
- Major League Baseball Players Association leadership meeting (No vote)
- Vote scheduled
- Bruce Meyer unanimously elected
ESPN’s Jeff Passan has been all over this situation from the start. Here’s what he revealed just 48 hours ago,
“MLBPA executive director Tony Clark resigned after an internal investigation revealed he had an inappropriate relationship with his sister-in-law, who had been hired by the union in 2023, sources tell me and Don Van Natta Jr.
The MLBPA was supposed to hold its first meeting with players this spring at Cleveland’s camp. That meeting was abruptly canceled and leaves the union without its top leader in a bargaining year.
The 4:30 p.m. call by MLBPA leadership ended without it voting on an interim executive director to replace Tony Clark, sources tell ESPN. The union is expected to hold a vote as soon, however, and the hope, sources said, is to have someone in place by then. For all the salaciousness of Tony Clark’s resignation, it offers MLBPA an opportunity to be a force for good and help keep baseball on the field in 2027.”

However, now the vote has taken place. The crisis is now smoothing out… somewhat. Meyer will definitely have his work cut out for him especially when it comes to such issues like salary cap. But not being afraid of lockouts, Bruce will no doubt be a strong negotiator.
Nevertheless Passan added, “Bruce Meyer has been unanimously elected as executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association, sources tell ESPN. Meyer, who was previously the No. 2 at the union, becomes the sixth executive director in the union’s history. Bruce Meyer’s election by the 72 players on the union executive board is in an interim capacity, sources said. Meyer will remain in charge of collective-bargaining negotiations for the union as the Dec. 1 expiration of the CBA approaches.”
