Browns Pounded the Jets Into the Ground On Thursday Night

You gotta love the deep balls that Joe Flacco throws so effortlessly. But as the Browns pounded the the Jets into the ground on Thursday night, I doubt they would agree with me. In the last four weeks Flacco has thrown for over 1,300 yards, more than any other quarterback. He had kept himself in shape as he waited for a team to call him. And his readiness was on full display tonight.

Scoring a touchdown on their first drive, the Browns got off to a hot start. But the Jets responded with an opening touchdown of their own. The Browns followed up with another touchdown. Next the Jets fumbled the ball on the kickoff return and it was recovered by the Browns. They caught a break when the Browns couldn’t move the ball. Instead they turned it over on downs.

Right before the two minute warning the Jets defense breathed some life into their game. A tipped pass was intercepted by Jermaine Johnson and run back for a 37 yard touchdown. Before the Flacco interception, the Browns had been playing close to perfectly.

In under two minutes in the second quarter Flacco somehow avoided a sack. He chucked the ball to Jerome Ford who evaded a few tackles and bulldozed his way into the end zone. To their credit the Jets moved the ball until they got called for holding Myles Garrett. But they still got into field goal range. Greg Zuerlein’s 36 yard field goal was good making the halftime score 17-34.

The Jets opened the third quarter with a 5 1/2 minute drive that got to the six yard line. But they couldn’t get the touchdown and then the 31 yard field goal was blocked. Not a great start.

Yet the Browns also had a bonehead moment. In the fourth quarter they had stopped the Jets on 4th & inches. But a Browns player was standing on the edge of the field. So they were penalized for 12 men on the field giving the Jets a first down.

Amari Cooper was inactive for this game. Elijah Moore was hurt during the first half. But other players stepped up and Flacco put up 296 yards in the first half anyway. But they did have 3 turnovers and made some other mistakes. They have to clean up the errors to have success in the playoffs.
