Broncos Let Victory Slip Away On Thursday Night Football

This game was so important it became the first game to be flexed into the Thursday slot since late-season Thursday flex scheduling was approved. It was an epic AFC West showdown that would help determine playoff seeding. However, the Denver Broncos let victory slip away on Thursday Night Football as they took on their division rival Los Angeles Chargers.

The Chargers got the ball first and immediately went three and out. Whereas the Broncos marched down the field by using their rushing game. The multiple run plays let the Broncos eat up almost six minutes of the clock before Audric Estime ran in the 3-yard touchdown. But the Chargers rallied also using their running game effectively. Ten plays and 70 yards later they had their first touchdown. On the Bronco’s second touchdown the officials picked up a flag for illegal man downfield, saying he was engaged in a tackle. That was different.

But the Broncos were on a roll and would scored another touchdown in the half. The Chargers defense couldn’t get a stop even when the Broncos were in third down situations. It wasn’t until the second quarter that they sacked Nix and forced the Broncos to punt. On the other hand the Broncos held the Chargers to 13 points in the first half. Herbert threw a goal line interception on 1st & 10 at DEN 26. But the Broncos couldn’t capitalize on the turnover and had to punt. However, it wasn’t all bad news for the Chargers. Herbert only had two incompletions in the first half and threw the ball to eight different receivers.

Due to a Fair Catch Interference penalty for 15 yards the Chargers got an untimed play. They used it to kick a 57-yard field goal. The halftime score was 21-13 Broncos.

Broncos opened third quarter with 41-yard field goal drive. The Chargers went down the field using mostly pass plays. A roughing the passer penalty gave the Chargers a fresh set of downs. Gus Edwards ran in the 5-yard touchdown, but Herbert failed to pick up the two-point conversion attempt. However, they cut the deficit down to 5 points. The Chargers defense then stopped the Broncos forcing another punt. And the Chargers scored another touchdown. And another one. The Broncos kicked a 55-yard field goal but the Chargers did enough to hang on for the 27-34 win.

Although the Broncos started off on fire they fell apart in the end. On a historical note, Cameron Dicker’s 57-yarder fair-catch kick was also the longest such field goal in NFL history. And now the Chargers are second in the division behind the Chiefs.
