Brewers Sign Catcher Austin Nola to Minor League Deal

Brewers Sign Catcher Austin Nola to Minor League Deal- Includes ST Invite

Former Padres player Austin Nola is on the move this offseason. The Milwaukee Brewers hit the dong and said, “Come in down!” They are rapidly working to fill out their remaining roster with pieces they hope will result in on field success. With that in mind, the Brewers Sign Catcher Austin Nola to Minor League deal, which also includes a ST invite.

The Brewers currently now have a backlog of catchers. Therefore, the job will be fought for during this upcoming spring. In fact, there are 5 guys in the mix, with the recent pick up of Nola.

Player development analyst, Lance Brozdowski for Marquee Sports Network; feels that this a good move being made by the Brewers. That although Nola had an extremely rough 2023 season, things could improve. Regarding Austin and the ability of the Brewers’ catching lab Lance says,

“Nola has -13 catcher framing runs above average over his last 162 games.

If I know anything about the Brewers, Austin Nola will be a plus framing catcher next season. Book it.

[While nothing may vastly improve his arm strength] framing has a greater impact on catcher value. Doubt Brewers really care / will just have him use plyo balls if he hasn’t already.”

Noted. Also, if the Brewers can “fix” Nola they will have a great guy and teammate on their hands.

All great insights, however, let’s get back to the actual signing for a moment. Adam McCalvy a Brewers beat writer for the MLB, provides some intel into Nola’s deal with Milwaukee. McCalvy writes,

The Brewers have signed C Austin Nola to a Minor League deal with an invitation to big league camp. The 34-year-old became a free agent when the Padres non-tendered him in November.

Austin Nola makes five catchers in big league camp so far. William Contreras, Eric Haase and Jeferson Quero on the 40-man roster; Nola and Brian Navarreto as non-roster invitees.

Nola, like his brother, is a very hard worker, so we know he will give this opportunity his all. Moreover, really happy to see such a nice guy get another shot; with another team to play the game he loves.
