Braves Ronald Acuna Jr Exits Game After Non-Contact Injury While Running Bases
Not what anyone wants to see. And quite the blow for the Atlanta franchise and its fans. The Braves Ronald Acuna Jr exits the game after suffering a non-contact injury while running the bases.
Acuna is no stranger injury. He has a history, especially when it comes to issues involving his knee. Many can still remember what occurred in 2021; and during a recent spring training. Therefore, seeing Ronald suddenly lose the ability to run and stand; is a sight that sets off plenty of alarm bells.
So then, what caused Acuna to go down? No players contacted him, he was between bases when it seems one leg simply gave out. Causing him to lay helplessly on the ground wincing in pain.
Jesse Morse, MD, who is double board-certified in Family & Sports Medicine; and that specializes in non-surgical orthopedics, particularly regenerative medicine (PRP, stem cells), with a clinic in Miami. Weighed in on the Ronald Acuna Jr bases running injury. Morse, is a good professional to consult since he has been taking care of professional athletes regularly since 2017. Therefore, regarding Acuna Jr., Morse states,
“Ronald Acuña Jr. suffered a non-contact injury to his left knee.
In 2021 Acuna tore his right ACL and then injured his meniscus earlier this year. He was trying to steal 3rd and his knee appears to simply give out. He eventually walks off the field with the help of the training staff. It appears that he is putting weight on the leg, which is good news.”

Morse continues on and provides a few possibilities and scenarios from his standpoint of what may be going with Ronald. He reveals:
“There are 4 possibilities/scenarios here:
1. No significant injury to the knee. Simply tweaked it and everything checks out fine. Sometimes this is accompanied by a bone bruise, which is more painful than concerning. This would be ideal and best case scenario. Usually mo significant treatments are needed, maybe a cortisone shot and some physical therapy. Return in 0-3 weeks.
2. Concern for knee sprain, usually an injury to the MCL or meniscus. These can be associated with the with pain, swelling and instability.
If this is mild injury, then a conservative approach is usually taken, but with a non-surgical mindset.
This likely means a combination of physical therapy, cortisone, PRP or orthobiologics (stem cells), injected into the knee along with physical therapy, which would cause him to miss some time.
Return to play 2-4 weeks.
3. A moderate injury to the knee, similar to #2 but the damage is more severe and requires surgery. Sometimes there is a large enough piece of the meniscus that is torn to prohibit him from playing the entire season safely on that knee. In this situation, he would undergo surgery, likely a partial meniscectomy to trim out and remove some of the damaged meniscus.
Since the meniscus does not have a good blood supply, it does not heal well on its own, and as a result would only continue to bother him if this was not addressed.
While this is a good temporary solution, this may lead to additional cartilage and meniscal damage in the future.
This can be combined with scenario #2 and he would likely miss 4-6 weeks.
4. Would be the worst case scenario where the MRI determines that there is a large unstable part of the meniscus or a torn ACL.
In this scenario the damage to the meniscus would be so large that removing that piece would be counterproductive to his knee and for his career, sometimes these are associated with an ACL tear, which would require season-ending surgery, similar to 2021.
Let’s hope it is the first option, or at least not the last option.”
Atlanta Braves Ronald Acuna Exits Pirates Game With Leg Injury
Thank you Jesse Morse; that is some very in-depth and interesting intel. Nonetheless, this leaves the Braves down a guy who is a major part of their success. However, the Braves team is still a stacked juggernaut with players like: Ozzie Albies, Matt Olsen, Max Fried, Austin Riley and Chris Sale.
Even after tragedy reared it’s ugly head during the Braves and Pirates matchup. Atlanta still was able to stay focused at the task at hand. Continuing to hammer away at Pittsburgh, and thus finding themselves up 6-1 in the 8th. They would go on to win, 8-1. Bringing them to a record of 30-20 and in second place in the NL East; behind the Phillies.
Ronald had began the game against Pittsburgh strong. Acuña doubled to begin the game before the injury occurred. Quite the competitor. Therefore, we hope the best for Ronald and hope he heals fast.
