Brandon Graham Ended His Short Retirement And Returned To The Eagles

It was a sad day for Philly fans when he made his official retirement announcement in March earlier this year. For 15 years he had been a stalwart leader on the team and in the community. Losing him left one of many holes for general manager Howie Roseman to fill. He filled one by signing defensive end Za’Darius Smith to a one-year contract. But Smith suddenly announced his own retirement. As a result Brandon Graham has now ended his short retirement and returned to the Eagles.

Graham and the Eagles have agreed to terms on a contract to bring the defensive end back, the team announced on Tuesday morning. Besides Smith’s unexpected retirement last week, the Eagles pass rush was hit with the free agency losses of Josh Sweat who went to the Arizona Cardinals. And Milton Williams who joined up with the New England Patriots. Plus injuries have also played a role in diminishing the pass rush with Nolan Smith Jr. going on injured reserve with a triceps issue and Ogbo Okoronkwo also being on injured reserve with a triceps injury.

The team really needs Graham now more than ever. And he obviously believes he still has something to offer to the team. He was always known for being in peak physical condition and he was still playing at a high-level when he retired. Graham was dominant right up until he suffered a torn triceps injury against the Rams and then played well in Super Bowl LIX upon his return from injury. He took to heart the saying, “If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready.” And Graham is ready to play again.

Former teammate, Jason Kelce, commented on the return of Graham during his appearance on 94WIP:

“It felt like he got convinced that it was time to hang it up,” Kelce said during an appearance on 94WIP. “And I don’t know this, I think at the end of the day if Brandon in his heart wants to come back, I think the Eagles should damn sure give him that opportunity because I think they need that.”

He will definitely provide a much needed spark to the defense in particular. Or as Philadelphia Eagles Insider, Dave Spadaro put it: “He adds incredible veteran leadership, versatility to play up and down the defensive line, and enough energy to light up a stadium. He’s back, and the Eagles are looking for him to contribute in a number of ways in a rotation that gains some depth, talent, leadership, and energy for the remainder of the season.”

Welcome back Brandon!
