Boston Red Sox Made Splash Signing Pitcher Ranger Suarez To Five-Year Deal
After all the hoopla that came out of them losing out on Alex Bregman the unexpected happened. Everyone knew top baseball executive Craig Breslow would have to do something big to make up for the loss. And he did just that. Instead of agreeing to terms with Bregman they pulled off a pivot. The Boston Red Sox made a splash signing Ranger Suarez to a five-year deal. Sources told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand that the deal is worth $130 million. Although the team has not confirmed the deal at this time.
Having a big bat (preferably more than one) is important for every team but the Red Sox have made it a priority to improve their rotation. They have added to their pitching by trading for Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo. Now with the signing of Ranger Suarez ESPN MLB analyst David Shoenfield called Boston’s rotation the best in baseball. That kind of high praise should be good news to Boston fans.
He went on to say that according to FanGraphs, Boston’s rotation was a 17.2 projected WAR. Just above the Dodger’s 17.1 WAR. He stated, “Suarez bumps up that figure another couple of wins, with the group lining up as Garrett Crochet, Sonny Gray, Suarez, Brayan Bello, Johan Oviedo, Payton Tolle, and Connelly Early, with plenty of depth in Kyle Harrison plus Patrick Sandoval and Kutter Crawford coming off injuries.” The WAR is now up to 18.2, first overall.
Despite Breslow having made many trades this winter, Suarez was the first free agent added in this MLB offseason. They let Bregman get away and Bo Bichette is the only big bat available in free agency who is being hotly pursued. So Breslow shifted his focus to pitching and has assembled an amazing cast.

As for Suarez he became a full-time starter in 2022 and helped the Phillies reach the World Series. He’s known as one of the best lefties in the game. During that span he posted a 3.59 ERA over 104 starts. He’s also been excellent in the postseason — in 11 appearances (eight starts), he owns a career 1.48 ERA.
Some fans might be glad about this signing but others not so much. Having a stellar rotation is nice but having a big bat is necessary if they want to make it to the playoffs again and not get eliminated in the Wild Card. We wonder if Buster Olney’s prediction will be correct.
He posted: “Given what Bregman was to their team and clubhouse last year, his unique two-way skills in a market that paid Pete Alonso $155m and Schwarber $150m, that makes no sense. Major miscalculation.”
Only time will tell.
