Boston Red Sox Concerned With Injuries To Buehler And Rookie Campbell
They were sorely in need of better pitching last season. So they went and got a former long-time Dodgers pitcher and the addition looked to be a good change. The Red Sox signed Walker Buehler to a $21.05 million contract to help improve their pitching rotation. They also picked up Kristian Campbell in the fourth round of the 2023 MLB Draft and he’s having a productive season this year. However, the Boston Red Sox are concerned with injuries to both Buehler and the rookie Campbell. Having both out of the lineup could spell trouble for the Sox.
Buehler has had to return to Boston for further evaluation on his shoulder issue. Whereas Campbell has been diagnosed with rib discomfort. According to MLB.com:
“On May 1, Red Sox manager Alex Cora revealed that Buehler was sent back to Boston to undergo testing after experiencing right shoulder soreness. Buehler’s last start came on April 26. Campbell was scratched roughly an hour before the May 1 series finale in Toronto with right rib discomfort he felt while stretching.”
Right now the Red Sox sit at 17-16 and have been doing much better with their pitching this season thanks to Buehler. His leadership has been a boon to the young pitching staff so his absence could put a kink in their future success. Buehler has been a front-line starter and has played a critical role in this season providing stability and steadiness to the team. Therefore the Sox are taking precautions by sending him to Boston to be assessed. Particularly since he has a history of injuries including Tommy John surgery.
As for Campbell he has been having an excellent season playing 29 of the team’s first 32 games. He’s put up four homeruns, eight doubles, 12 RBI’s and two stolen bases. But the Red Sox are concerned about the rib discomfort because that was the same issue that afflicted Triston Casas last season. It eventually kept him out for almost four months with torn cartilage in his rib cage.

The Sox have gotten off to a good start being just two games back from the New York Yankees. And they also have pitchers Brayan Bello and Lucas Giolito back in the rotation. Giolito looked great in his Red Sox debut this past Wednesday. But those gains have been negated by the two more recent injuries.
Brayan Bello will lead the Sox into a three-game series at home against the Twins on Friday. Buehler likely would have started Saturday, but that spot is currently listed as TBD. Garrett Crochet takes the ball in the Sunday afternoon finale against Minnesota. They will need to win those games to stay within striking distance of the Yankees.
