Well, they had a plan and they are sticking to it. Such proficiency is probably a big reason why Boston is one of the most valuable sports franchises around. Nevertheless, sources have confirmed that the Boston Celtics have indeed been Sold for $6.1 Billion to Private Equity Executive Bill Chisholm. This is historic, as it is the largest sale for a sports franchise in North America.

You may recall that at the beginning of July 2024 the Celtics announced that the ownership group would sell the franchise. Their goal was to sell it by the end of 2024 or sometime during the beginning of 2025. Being that it is only March, we say it looks like they made in the nick of time.

However, in case you forgot, here is the organization’s statement on selling the team. It was posted online and via social media. It mentions,

Boston Basketball Partners L.L.C., the ownership group of the Boston Celtics, announced today its intention to sell all the shares of the team. The controlling family of the ownership group, after considerable thought and internal discussion, has decided to sell the team for estate and family planning considerations.

The managing board of the ownership group expects to sell a majority interest in 2024 or early 2025, with the balance closing in 2028, and expects Wyc Grousbeck to remain as the Governor of the team until the second closing in 2028.”

Over the years the Celtics’ value has just gone up and up. From being worth millions to now billions. Over a span of a little more than 20 years. So the Grousbeck’s investment certainly paid off.

And the new ownership coming in, in a way is getting quite the steal. Boston has just won a championship and are in playoff contention having won 50 games so far this year. So then they are in good roster shape. PLUS, the Celtics have won the most championships out of all the NBA franchises. So a very valuable organization.

Nevertheless, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on the historic sale stating,

“BREAKING: Bill Chisholm, managing partner at Symphony Technology Group, has agreed to purchase the Boston Celtics from the Grousbeck family for a valuation for $6.1 billion, sources tell ESPN. This now is the largest sale for a sports franchise in North America.

The Boston Celtics’ sale of $6.1 billion surpasses the NFL’s Washington Commanders ($6.05 billion) for the highest sum ever for a North America sports team.

The Grousbeck’s purchased the Celtics for $360 million in 2002.

In 2025, the family sells for $6.1 billion.”

Can you say cha-ching? So now Boston now enters the William Chisholm era. However, the deal is pending NBA Board of Governors approval.

But Chisholm is ready to takeover the team he’s loved for years. In a statement he reveals, Growing up on the North Shore and attending college in New England, I have been a die-hard Celtics fan my entire life. I understand how important the Celtics are to the city of Boston – the role the team plays in the community is different than any other city in the country. I also understand that there is a responsibility as a leader of the organization to the people of Boston, and I am up for this challenge.”
