Boston Celtics Continue To Make Moves Trading Kristaps Porzingis To Hawks
They got started yesterday on revamping their roster. They traded Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trailblazers despite having helped the team win the 2024 NBA Championship. However, it was a necessary move to help adjust their salary cap. But the Boston Celtics continue to make move by trading Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks. And in Porzingis’ case it was also strictly a financial move. Therefore, president of basketball operations Brad Stevens, has kicked off what promises to be a busy offseason.
Providing details about the trade is ESPN NBA Insider Shams Charania who wrote:
BREAKING: Boston, Atlanta and Brooklyn are finalizing a three-team trade that sends Kristaps Porzingis and a second-round pick to the Hawks, Terance Mann and Atlanta’s No. 22 pick to the Nets, and Georges Niang and a second-rounder to the Celtics.
Opportunistic acquisitions for the Hawks and Nets — while the Celtics are now out of the salary cap’s second apron.
The Celtics needed to cut salary to avoid being constricted by the second apron. And the Celtics will save a projected $180 million in tax penalties according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks. Stevens making these moves makes since because Holiday was on the books for an additional three years and $104 million. Whereas, Porzingis has another two years and $60 million on his contract. So as spotrac contributor Keith Smith put it, “WAY more to come, but the Boston Celtics are now out of the second apron by $4.5M. The Celtics are $7.4M over the first apron and about $15.4M over the luxury tax.”
Currently Al Horford, Luke Kornet and Torrey Craig are unrestricted free agents. Now that the Celtics are $4.7 million under the second apron of the luxury tax they could bring any or all of them back if they choose to do so.

Previously in March, Porzingis had posted about having a mystery illness. Eventually he was diagnosed with Post-Viral Syndrome. It caused fatigue and breathing difficulties and its effects lasted into the post season. However, he has said he is feeling much better and is looking forward to a healthy offseason and European championship with his national team.
Despite being traded, Porzingis posted a nice farewell to Boston. He said:
“Boston will always be special in my heart. Huge thank you to the organization, coaches, staff, my teammates and the fans! Class organization. Forever grateful.”
