Boston Bruins Traded Captain Brad Marchand To Florida Panthers

Right at the buzzer a big trade was announced prior to the NHL deadline. The trade deadline expired today at 3 p.m. ET and an epic move was made in the northeast. The Boston Bruins traded their captain Brad Marchand to the rival Florida Panthers. The Bruins are getting a conditional 2027 second-round pick. It could turn into a first in 2028 if conditions are met. Marchand was in the final months of an eight-year deal with Boston that carried a $6.125 million salary cap hit.

For Marchand it’s a good trade because he’ll be leaving the Bruins who are currently out of playoff contention. And going to the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. They are in very good shape for bringing it home once again. They bolstered their team even further with the addition of defenseman Seth Jones from Chicago. Along with backup goalie Vitek Vanecek and a depth forward in Nico Sturm.

On the other hand the fire sale in Boston continued as they made additional trades. They traded defenseman Brandon Carlo to the Toronto Maple Leafs. NHL Insider Chris Johnston posted what he said after the trade: “Definitely a shocker when I heard that it was Toronto. … What an opportunity for me to go in there and try and help this group win.” Leafs center Fraser Minten is part of the return package going to the Bruins in exchange for defenseman Brandon Carlo. Earlier in the week the Bruins also traded  center Trent Frederic and left wing Justin Brazeau.

And rounding out Friday’s trade action the Bruins traded center Charlie Coyle and a 2026 fifth-round pick to the Colorado Avalanche. In exchange for center Casey Mittelstadt, forward prospect Will Zellers and a conditional 2025 second-round draft pick.

All the players that were traded on Friday are now with playoff contending teams. And they all are eager to help their respective teams in their quest for the Cup. However, some fans may be upset about Marchand going to Florida. For the past two seasons in a row the Panthers have eliminated the Bruins from the playoffs. And now they will have to see their former beloved captain playing with their hated rivals. It might be too much for them to bear!

At any rate, the Bruins took full advantage of the sellers’ market. While other teams added to their rosters and potentially increased their playoff chances. But one thing to keep in mind is that Marchand turns 37 in May. He is currently sidelined with an upper-body injury that could keep him out until shortly before the playoffs. We’ll see how all the trades play out.
