Bobby Jenks Succumbed To Battle With Cancer Passed Away at Age 44
The United States observed the fourth of July holiday yesterday. But there has been quite a bit of sad news during this long weekend. There was the devastating flooding in central Texas, the funeral for former Liverpool player Diogo Jota and his brother and yesterday a beloved MLB player was lost. Former White Sox All-Star pitcher Bobby Jenks succumbed to a battle with stomach cancer and passed away at age 44.
Last year Jenks had moved to Portugal where he was diagnosed with a deep vein thrombosis in his right calf. That condition led to blood clots that spread to his lungs and prompted further testing. Later he was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, a form of stomach cancer and began undergoing radiation. The White Sox showed their solidarity with Jenks while he was being treated, posting on Instagram, “We stand with you, Bobby” and “thinking of Bobby as he is being treated.”
The White Sox put out an official statement today regarding the passing of Jenks:
“We have lost an iconic member of the White Sox family today,” said White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. “None of us will ever forget that ninth inning of Game 4 in Houston, all that Bobby did for the 2005 World Series champions and for the entire Sox organization during his time in Chicago. He and his family knew cancer would be his toughest battle, and he will be missed as a husband, father, friend, and teammate. He will forever hold a special place in all our hearts.”
Jenks was a big part of the 2005 White Sox World Series Championship team. That championship season ended an 88-year drought for the team. He appeared in six games (five scoreless efforts) during the Sox 11-1 run in the playoffs, earning saves in series-clinching wins in Game 3 of the ALDS at Boston and Game 4 of the World Series at Houston.

Jenks spent six seasons with the White Sox from 2005 to 2010 and also played for the Boston Red Sox in 2011. The reliever finished his major league career with a 16-20 record, 3.53 ERA and 173 saves. In his last interview with SoxTV Jenks said:
“You play for the love of the game, the joy of it,” said Jenks during his last interview with SoxTV in summer 2024. “It’s what I love to do. I’m playing to be a world champion and that’s what I wanted to do from the time I picked up a baseball.”
He is survived by his wife, Eleni Tzitzivacos, their two children, Zeno and Kate and his four children from a prior marriage, Cuma, Nolan, Rylan and Jackson. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends.
