Bob Melvin Possibly Going to San Francisco Giants

Bob Melvin Possibly Going to San Francisco Giants? Speculation Versus Reality

Bob Melvin possibly going to the San Francisco Giants? Word on these MLB streets is that BoMel is a viable candidate for the Padres’ neighbors to the north. Particularly since the 2023 season did not turn out as planned.

All week long, the talk of the friar faithful has been; will Bob Melvin manage the Giants next year instead of the San Diego Padres? There’s plenty of evidence available that this speculation may have some truth it. Especially, when focusing on various cases of organization “turmoil.”

There is a rift between AJ Preller and Bob Melvin. San Diego beat reporter, Kevin Acee  reported there is a meeting among the Padres higher-ups on Monday to see if they can work out their differences. Yikes.

Moreover, to add intrigue to the situation, the San Francisco Giants fired Gabe Kapler their manager this week. Meaning there is a job opening for a manager in San Francisco where Bob Melvin played as a player; and across the bay from where he managed in Oakland for many years. In addition, Farhan Zaidi, who is President of Baseball Operations is familiar with Melvin from their time together in Oakland.

Is this a way for both Preller and Melvin to save face by “mutually parting ways?” San Diego sports talk radio has been blowing up about the possibility of Bob Melvin managing the Giants…. is this Bruce Bochy all over again? Are we doomed to see a former manager leave and gain the World Series wins we desire?

I say no way.  I can’t see it happening. Allow me to explain.

Bob Melvin is under contract for another season. So then, the Padres will not let him go to a division rival in 2024. The only way that could happen is if Preller is let go, and someone else comes in and doesn’t want to work with Melvin.

If it did happen, the Giants would have to provide the Padres compensation. Essentially they have to trade for Bob Melvin. And here’s a reality check… Bob Melvin was involved in this disappointing Padres season. Period.

Therefore, the Giants may not even want him. Also, the Padres still can’t risk having Melvin go to San Francisco and finishing ahead of them in the standings next season. It would be a terrible look (again).

Bob Melvin Possibly Going to San Francisco Giants? Speculation Versus Reality

The Padres fell for this many years ago after the 2006 season when then—new Padres CEO Sandy Alderson let Bruce Bochy go to the Giants; because he wanted a younger manager ((reportedly). And of course in typical bungling Padres fashion … He won 3 world championships there; while the Padres were one of the worst teams in baseball during that time.

Not to mention Bochy had another team in the playoffs while the Padres are going home and in chaos once again. Fool me once shame on you ….fool me twice shame on me. A lesson I think has been learned.

Therefore, I just don’t see it happening. It’s too risky for the Padres to let Bob Melvin go to the Giants and beat them next season, and they have the power to prevent it. But here’s the big question… will they?
