Blocked Field Goals Were The Order Of The Day In NFL Week 3 Action
Special teams are often forgotten but play an important part of any football game. And today that was never more evident in at least three games in which field goals failed. Actually blocked field goals were the order of the day in NFL Week 3 action. The Los Angeles Rams, the Green Bay Packers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers looked to have locked in victories until disaster struck. It appeared all three teams had the victory in the bag only to have their plans disrupted.
First off the Green Bay Packers didn’t just have field goal troubles, they also had 14 accepted penalties for 75 yards, with half of those coming in the fourth quarter alone. They were on the Cleveland 22 with a little more than two minutes remaining. But things started going wrong after a fumble and false start put them in position for about a 43-yard attempt. However, Cleveland special-teams ace Shelby Harris busted through for his sixth-career blocked field goal. The Browns recovered the blocked field goal at the 47. Browns’ quarterback Joe Flacco clocked the ball with two seconds left. That was just enough time for kicker Andre Smzyt to nail the game-winning 55-yard field goal. The Packers lost to the Browns 10-13.
Next up the Los Angeles Rams who held a 26-7 lead during the second half. But two blocked field goals changed the outcome of their game against the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles. Both of the blocks occurred in the fourth quarter in which the Eagles had taken the lead with a score of 27-26, with 1:48 left. Yet, the Rams still had a chance to win the game. They lined up for the potential game-winning field goal with three seconds left. But that’s when the Eagles blocked the kick and returned it for a touchdown to seal their 33-26 win. It was the Rams’ first loss this season.

And last but not least were the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers got into position to kick a 43-yard field goal that would have given them a nine-point lead, but Chase McLaughlin’s 43-yard attempt was blocked by Will McDonald, who then chased down the bouncing ball and returned it 50 yards for the go-ahead score. However, the Buccaneers had a much happier ending than the other two teams. Quarterback Baker Mayfield drove his team down the field to set up McLaughlin’s 36-yard game-winner. They won the game 29-27 over the New York Jets and are off to a 3-0 start this season.
So kudos to the special teamers who blocked the field goals and scored. And to the ones who gave up the blocks better luck next time!
