Blockbuster Trade Results in Kevin Durant Being Traded To Houston Rockets

The 2014 NBA MVP is headed to his fifth team in his career. He started his professional basketball career with the Oklahoma City Thunder, formerly known as the Seattle Supersonics, drafted with the second overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft. He went on to play with the Golden State Warriors, Brooklyn Nets and currently the Phoenix Suns. However, a blockbuster trade results in Kevin Durant being traded to the Houston Rockets.

ESPN NBA Insider Shams Charania reported the breaking news:

“BREAKING: The Phoenix Suns are trading two-time NBA Finals MVP Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in the 2025 draft and five second-round picks, sources tell ESPN.”

“Blockbuster trade on the final day of the NBA season. The Suns engaged in deep conversations with the two Durant finalists — Houston and Miami — over the last 24 hours and reached agreement on the deal Sunday morning.”

Everyone knew that Durant would be traded but he declined to have the trade made during the season. Durant spoke earlier about being traded saying:

“Me going into your team in the middle of the season it’s going to be a big blow to any team I’m going to,” Durant said at the time. “I get why you want to trade me, simple fact that’s just business. But for me looking at it, it just doesn’t make sense for either side to go through that when we could just play the season out and if that’s the decision you want to make in the offseason then you figure it out.”

He also made it clear he didn’t want to return to Golden State, the team with whom he had won two championships in 2017 and 2018.

The trade can be formally completed when the new league year begins July 6. Durant will be joining a team that had 52 wins this past season and he elevates the team’s positioning for championship contention. Durant also has a strong relationship with the Rockets’ head coach Ime Udoka. They spent time together on the Brooklyn Nets and also USA Basketball. Durant also may have been pleased about Udoka agreeing to a long-term extension with the team last week.

Today is game 7 of the NBA Finals which could be a good sign for this trade. As the Houston Rockets posted on social media:

“It’s a great day for NBA Finals Game 7s. On this day in 1994, Clutch City was BORN as the Rockets won Game 7 of the NBA Finals & secured the franchise’s first ever championship!”

The Rockets already had a suffocating defense and with Durant coming on board their offense will be a force to reckon with.
