Blockbuster Trade for Karl-Anthony Towns Is Finally Official
He’s been a huge part of the Minnesota Timberwolves for nearly a decade. But he was also active in the community endearing himself to the fans. But that time has come to an end as the blockbuster trade for Karl-Anthony Towns is finally official. Three teams were involved with the trade, along with multiple players, and draft picks. The Minnesota Timberwolves yesterday announced the team has acquired forward Keita Bates-Diop, guard Donte DiVincenzo, forward Julius Randle and a first round pick (via the Detroit Pistons) from the New York Knicks in exchange for forward/center Karl-Anthony Towns. As part of a three-deal which includes the Charlotte Hornets, the Timberwolves will send the Hornets a 2025 second round pick. It’s been five days since the agreement was reported, the final details were ironed out late on Tuesday, according to Shams Charania.
Originally drafted with the first overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft by the Timberwolves, Towns appeared in 573 career games (all starts) for Minnesota over nine seasons, averaging 22.9 points on 52.4% shooting, including 39.8% from deep, 10.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 34.0 minutes per game. Amongst the all-time Timberwolves career leaders, Towns ranks first in three-pointers made (975), second in points (13,121), field goals made (7,647), rebounds (6,216) and blocks (721) while ranking fourth in games played (573), assists (1,815) and steals (452).
He is one of 10 players in NBA history to average at least 18.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in each of his first nine seasons in the NBA. The Edison, N.J. native is a two-time All-NBA selection (Third Team in 2017-18 and 2021-22) and four-time All-Star (2018, 2019, 2022 and 2024). Towns was named the 2015-16 Kia NBA Rookie of the Year and the 2023-24 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion.

And we can’t overlook his work within the community. Once he organized a drive that got thousands of winter coats to young people in need. He hosted disadvantaged kids for movie screenings and Christmas giveaways. He performed random acts of kindness, including buying a car for a fan who posted a GoFundMe on Twitter when theirs was stolen. Clearly he will be missed. But it wasn’t always smooth sailing for Towns with the Timberwolves.
He survived five coaches and seven general managers in the first seven years of his career. With so many organizational changes it was no wonder that he had to endure many losses on the court. And not to mention the personnel changes in co-stars such as Jimmy Butler, D’Angelo Russell, and Andrew Wiggins. The right combination was finally hit upon when Anthony Edwards joined the team. But despite all the upheaval, Towns remained loyal to the Timberwolves. He wanted to spend his whole career in Minnesota and see his jersey hung in the rafters .
Towns Says Goodbye To Minnesota
He posted a simple but heartfelt farewell on social media:
To the Timberwolves Family:
Nine years ago, I arrived in Minnesota as a young man with a dream. Little did I know that this place would become my home, and its people would become my family. Your love, support, and unwavering loyalty have fueled my journey and inspired me to be the best player I could be.
Thank you to my teammates, coaches, and the entire Timberwolves organization for the countless opportunities and experiences. I’ll cherish the friendships I’ve made and the battles we’ve fought together.
To the incredible fans, your support has meant the world to me. It gave me strength on and off the court. I’ll never forget it.
You’ll always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for everything.
KAT
Hopefully, KAT will be happy with his new team. But the ramifications of this blockbuster trade may not be fully known for years to come.
