Blake Snell Signs Two-Year $62 Million Deal With Giants

Blake Snell Signs Two-Year $62 Million Deal With Giants

It is finally all over. The two time Cy Young winner has officially found a new home. After a quite exhaustive free agency for fans and baseball enthusiasts; the lefty pitcher is going from San Diego to San Francisco. Yes, Blake Snell signs a two-year $62 Million deal with the Giants. Adding yet another splashy signing to the franchise’s roster after picking up outfielder, Jung-Hoo Lee; back in December.

NY Post’s Jon Heyman was first on the Blake Snell signing news. Heyman also had heard rumblings early on in the day about Blake possibly becoming a Giant. Even getting the chance to get a statement  with Giants manager Bob Melvin about how he felt about the Blake Snell free agency situation. Jon reports,

“[The] Giants are among teams showing interest in reigning NL Cy Young winner Blake Snell. Uncertain where SF stands but manager Bob Melvin, who had him in SD, said this today. “I want Blake to go somewhere he’s happy. He’s a terrific kid and a good pitcher.”

Nice comments from Bob. Nevertheless, in just a few hours later, San Francisco made their standing with Snell extremely clear. Heyman goes back online once more to mention the official signing. He says,

“Breaking: Snell to the Giants. $62M, 2 years. Opt out.”

Short and sweet. And another Boras client is finally off the board. This has felt like such a strange free agency; with many teams not willing to engage in big signings and huge contracts. While some say this is the market resetting itself (which does happen); and others feel the GMs are coming together against Boras and his tactics. All of his clients still got pretty good “prove it” deals.

A lot of teams felt uneasy about this year’s free agents. However, if they prove themselves… again… there could be some big money waiting on them in the near future. They’re all one opt-out away from a better contract.

Speaking of contracts, ESPN’s Jeff Passan had a little more intel about Snell’s signing with San Francisco. Passan states,

“Reigning National League Cy Young winner Blake Snell and the San Francisco Giants are in agreement on a two-year, $62 million contract that includes an opt-out after the first season, a source tells ESPN.

Blake Snell’s deal with the San Francisco Giants ends a free agency that stretched to nine days before Opening Day. He entered the winter hoping for a long-term deal, but the market at the price he sought never materialized, and he winds up in San Francisco. First: Jon Heyman.”

What a wild free agency. There were some biggies, like with the deals the Phillies handed out to their pitchers, Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler. Astros snagged closer Josh Hader, with $95 million contract. Also, the Giants gave Lee $51 million more than Snell (granted there’s 4 more years involved). Yet, next year we will most likely see Juan Soto get a pretty sizable contract; therefore, the reign of Scott Boras shall continue.
