Blake Snell Free Agency-Padres, Giants and Dodgers All Interested
San Diego is entering the chat. For a bit, it’s been assumed (since last season); that the Padres would let Blake Snell go as a free agent at the end of the season. However, now the verdict seems to be leaning towards the San Diego ball club being in the Blake Snell free agency mix.
Other teams that are throwing their hats into this pitching sweepstakes, include NL West Division rivals; the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers. Both teams are in need of pitching. San Francisco could definitely use a guy of Snell’s caliber to help garner more wins for a playoff push. Since the Giants have already snagged Bob Melvin from San Diego; getting Blake Snell too would be a real heartbreaker for Padres fans.
Moreover, the Dodgers’ ace, Kershaw, is coming off surgery and will not be able to resume play till next summer. Also, Urias will not be returning due to a domestic violence incident. Therefore, the Dodgers are also in the market for some good pitching; and with Blake winning a second Cy Young Award, he is gleaming brightly in the eyes of all potential suitors.

A tough fact: As a Padre, Blake is inconsistent with his pitching. There’s good games and bad games. He walks a lots of guys; and at times can only be able to go three or four innings when he starts. However, all of the above could stem from “comfort level.”
Blake Snell took a long time to adjust coming from Tampa Bay. He seems like the kind of guy that likes to be consistently in one place; where he’s comfortable. I’ve always thought he was going to go play for Seattle (his hometown); when he became a free agent, but that would require… change.

So then, should the Padres consider extending him? I say yes. Even though I have been very critical of Blake Snell for a long time. You have to consider the Padres starting pitching situation.
The Padres have no established starters under contract without options after Darvish and Musgrove. So the Padres will have to pay somebody anyway to fill out their starting rotation if they want to contend in 2024. It might as well be a guy who’s comfortable here, and that you are aware of his strengths and weaknesses.
While he can be off sometimes. When he’s on, he can be dominant! Also, he doesn’t have the pressure of being the number one starter. In essence, if you have to pay a guy 20 million a year; wouldn’t you rather have Blake Snell than anyone else besides say… Ohtani? I think I would.
