Bills’ Tommy Doyle Announced Retirement For Medical Reasons
Injuries are the bane of all athletes no matter what the sport is that they play. However, it seems the attrition rate for NFL players is higher than average. That’s not surprising since most of them are involved in high speed collisions multiple times per game. But for some players they get bit by the injury bug continuously and have their playing careers shortened through no fault of their own. And that is the case with the Buffalo Bills’ offensive lineman Tommy Doyle who announced his retirement for medical reasons.
Doyle was drafted in the fifth round with the 161st pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. He spent the entirety of his abbreviated four year career with the Bills. In the first year of his career the Buffalo Bills clinched a spot in the playoffs for the 2021 season. The offensive tackle scored the first touchdown of his career when he caught a one-yard pass from quarterback Josh Allen. The Bills came away with the 47-17 victory over the New England Patriots in the Wild Card round. Unfortunately things went downhill from there for Doyle as he was plagued with injuries throughout his four-year campaign.
Doyle suffered an ACL tear on his right leg during the beginning of the 2022 season (Week 3). He was placed on season-ending injured reserved. Then Doyle suffered a severe leg injury in 2023 during Buffalo’s second preseason game against the Steelers on August 19. He missed the entire 2023 season being placed on injured reserve. The left leg injury left him with nerve damage. On June 4, 2024, the Bills placed Doyle on the reserve/PUP list. And he did not play for the entire 2024 season.
Bills’ Tommy Doyle Announced Retirement For Medical Reasons
As a result of the injuries, on February 14, 2025, Doyle announced his retirement from professional football due to medical reasons. But there was some good news for Doyle. Although he had not appeared in a regular season game since Week 3 of the 2022 season he was eligible for an NFL pension. Because seasons on Injured Reserve or the PUP list count towards the three seasons required to be eligible.
Doyle shared some thoughts on where he’s at with the retirement:
“At this point, with the calendar and the healing process, it looks as though it’s permanent,” Doyle said of the leg injury. “I’m just unable to play football at a high level, and it’s time. When you know you know.”
“Football is something that I’ve loved and put my life into,” Doyle said. “And I put a lot of time, effort and energy to try to get back on the field. But ultimately, that’s really not the plan God has for me, and I know that to be true. I feel that this is the time to announce it and move on.”
We hope Doyle will find peace and happiness in his retirement.
