Bills Bungled Their Chance to Advance to AFC Championship
I’m not gonna lie, I dislike Romo calling Chiefs games. His bias towards Kelce and Mahomes is so apparent it makes me cringe. And as the Bills bungled their chance to advance to the AFC Championship, he could hardly contain his glee.
However, the Bills couldn’t hear Romo. As was evidenced by their hot start of the game. They methodically drove down the field, eating up almost seven minutes of the clock. But had to kick a 27 yard field goal. Kansas City did the same on their opening drive but in half the time.
Yet the Bills responded with an impressive drive. Between Josh Allen and James Cook the Chiefs couldn’t stop the running game. Allen ran it in for the 5 yard touchdown. Kansas City got into the red zone but couldn’t punch it in. That’s been a weakness of theirs all season. So they settled for the 29 yard field goal.
As both defenses were missing blocks or not bringing guys down the scoring continued. Mahomes and Kelce did their usual thing, connecting and scoring. However, the lead continued to change until Buffalo scored another touchdown before the half making the score 13-17.
Kansas City opened up the third quarter and marched right down the field. Once again the Bills defense whiffed. They let Mahomes scramble for 24 yards then allowed a 30 yard pass completion. Mahomes found his favorite target, Kelce, for an easy three yard touchdown. But Buffalo came back with a good drive of their own.
It culminated in a pinpoint pass from Allen to Khalil Shakir. He put the ball down low where only Shakir could get it. Shakir made sure his feet were in bounds at the edge of the end zone as he hauled in the catch. The touchdown resulted in yet another lead change in Buffalo’s favor.

But after that Buffalo imploded. They let the Chiefs score again and take the lead. The Bills had three opportunities to score and failed to do so. First the offense couldn’t convert on a 4th down in their own territory. Then, after the turnover on downs, the Chiefs got the ball into the red zone. But they fumbled it through the end zone resulting in a touchback. Again Buffalo’s offense couldn’t move the ball and had to punt.
The Bills defense did what they hadn’t done all night. They stopped the Chiefs on third down forcing them to punt. The Bills offense needed to at least get a field goal to tie the game and force over time. They moved the ball to the 26 yard line but Allen missed throwing to the open receivers. It was like he was only seeing half the field. At any rate they had to try the 44 yard field goal. It went wide right and so did the Bills season.
This game perfectly captured how the Bills have played all season. They are the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde of the NFL. On one hand they are efficient and capable. On the other hand they fumble and bumble around on the field. In the first half they were Jekyll in the second half they were Hyde. It was a painful transition to watch.
Bills Lose Out on Golden Opportunity
If the Bills had continue playing with the same energy in the second half they could have won the game. Instead, they played sloppy and desperately. Why they went for a 4th and 5 with almost 13 minutes on the clock in the fourth quarter was baffling. Other curious play calls were also made giving them an air of desperation that was unwarranted. This type of behavior needs to be fixed or their next season will be doomed from the start.
So the Chiefs are moving on to the AFC Championship where they will square off with the Ravens. Patrick Mahomes won his first playoff game on the road. Can he do it again next week?
