Big Wins and Losses Made For An Interesting Week 8
Some teams won big on the scoreboard. Some teams lost big on the injury front. Therefore, the big wins and losses made for an interesting week 8 in the NFL. The Carolina Panthers got their first win of the season, beating the Houston Texans 13-15. It was anyone’s game until Panthers Kicker Eddy Pineiro scored the go-ahead field goal in the fourth quarter. That was good since he missed the extra point that would have tied the game in the 2nd quarter. Congrats to the Panthers on their victory.
The Dallas Cowboys blew out the Los Angeles Rams 20-43. After Dak Prescott was sacked several times on their first drive things greatly improved thanks to a penalty against the Rams for illegal contact. The Cowboys scored a touchdown on their first possession and never looked back. QB Matthew Stafford suffered a thumb injury and left the game in the third quarter and did not return. Despite the injury the Rams were losing 6-33 going into the half. The Cowboys scored every way possible so the Rams have work to do.
Good news for Green Bay Packers linebacker Rashan Gary. He signed a four-year contract extension worth up to $107 million. The bad news is that the Packers lost to the Minnesota Vikings. Although the Vikings were happy to get the win they suffered the loss of QB Kirk Cousins. Reports indicate he has a torn Achilles and is out for the season. And speaking of awful events, the battle of the New York teams was barely a skirmish. The offense was non-existent for both the Jets and Giants. Rallying in the fourth quarter the Jets had 24 seconds to get the game tying field goal. They went on to win the game in overtime 13-10. The less said about that game the better.
Big Wins and Losses Made For An Interesting Week 8
Brock Purdy’s struggles continued in the 49ers loss to the Bengals. He is discovering all the ways to lose in the NFL. It’s a tough lesson to learn but hopefully some of his injured teammates, like Deebo Samuel, will be back on the field soon to help him out. The Bengals are surging with the excellent play of QB Joe Burrow who threw three touchdowns and no interceptions. And since we are talking about the Bengals we might as well mention the other Ohio team. The Browns lost out to the Seahawks 20-24. The teams seemed evenly matched but a fumble by the Browns led to a Seahawks touchdown. We’ll see if the Browns can get things turned around next week against the 1-7 Arizona Cardinals.
And while we’re on the topic, the Cardinals suffered a loss to the Baltimore Ravens 31-24. They scored a touchdown in the 1st quarter but didn’t score again until the 4th quarter. QB Joshua Dobbs threw interceptions in the 2nd and 3rd quarters both of which led to Ravens touchdowns. The Ravens defense kept Dobbs contained, not allowing him to use his legs to pick up yards or first downs. In the fourth quarter the Cardinals mounted a comeback but it was too little too late.
New Orleans prevailed over Indianapolis 38-27. The Colts need secondary help. Seventh round pick Jaylon Jones and Tony Brown Jr. were the starting cornerbacks. Brown alone gave up 187 yards on seven catches and a touchdown. Ouch! On that note the Patriots lost to division rival Miami Dolphins. They scored a touchdown in the first half thanks to an interception by their defense. When the defense recovered a fumble on the Miami 21 yard line the offense settled for a field goal. The Patriots have to do better.
Other News and Notes
The Jaguars kept the winning going beating the Steeelers 20-10. Likewise the Eagles also won against division rival Commanders 38-31. It was cool seeing the Tenessee Titans playing in the throwback uniforms of the Houston Oilers. Google it kiddies. Rookie QB Will Levis 33rd pick in the draft led the Titans to victory. He threw four touchdowns with zero interceptions. Another big loss was the Chiefs to the Broncos 9-24. Both teams committed too many fumbles. But Denver broke their 16 game losing streak to the Dolphins. In the process, they made Mahomes look less than average. Oh well, as the Taylor Swift song says, “shake it off.”
Rounding out week 8 will be the Raiders @ Lions. The 29th ranked Raiders offense will have a tough time against the 5th ranked Lions defense. QB Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to play tonight. Enjoy the game sportsfeens!
