Big Ten Expected to Discipline Michigan: Over Sign Stealing and In-Person Recruiting

Today is not quite a surprise. There’s been plenty of rumblings over the possibility of the Big Ten taking some sort action; and now they are in fact choosing to act. They are not okay with the accusations of the Wolverines stealing signs or the college football team’s recruiting practices. Therefore, Big Ten expected to discipline Michigan, and thus dropping the hammer down on Jim Harbaugh and company.

What exactly is going to happen? How will this affect Wolverine football? ESPN’s Pete Thamel immediately reveals the scoop,

Breaking: The Big Ten is expected to discipline Michigan for the in-person scouting and sign stealing investigation and will prohibit Jim Harbaugh from being on the sideline for the rest of the regular season, sources told Pete Thamel.

He’ll be allowed to coach during the week.

Wow. Nevertheless, Michigan is not going silently into the night. They are maintaining their innocence when it comes to any foul play. ESPN sources went on to confirm this stance stating,

“Michigan confirms in a statement that it will “seek a court order” to fight a decision from the Big Ten that it calls “hasty” and claims it violates the “Conference’s own handbook.” Story with Dan Murphy [is forthcoming] on next legal steps.”

Nevertheless, we must keep in mind these are just moves by the Big Ten. The Conference has yet to take any disciplinary action. However, the Big Ten is not staying silent. In a statement the Big Ten says,

“Notably, the University’s November 8 response does not deny that the impermissible scheme occurred. Instead, it offers only procedural and technical arguments designed to delay accountability.

As a penalty imposed on the institution, the University football team must compete without its Head Football Coach for the games remaining in the 2023 regular-season, effective immediately. This disciplinary action shall not preclude the University or its football team from having its Head Football Coach attend practices or other football team activities.

We impose this disciplinary action even though the Conference has not yet received any information indicating that Head Football Coach Harbaugh was aware of the impermissible nature of the sign-stealing scheme….

This is not a sanction of Coach Harbaugh. It is a sanction against the University….that, under the extraordinary circumstances presented by this offensive conduct, best fits the violation because: (1) it preserves the ability of the University’s football student-athletes to continue competing; and (2) it recognizes that the Head Coach embodies the University for purposes of its football program.”

Things are definitely heating up with this situation. And only more details will soon be revealed. We will be sure to update you as soon as they come to the fore.
