Big Changes And Big Wins Headlined Week 9

Big Changes And Big Wins Headlined Week 9

Joshua Dobbs was traded to the Vikings. And the Raiders fired their coach and GM. Those big changes headlined some big wins in Week 9 of the NFL. Dobbs had less than a week to try to get up to speed on the Vikings playbook. Aidan O’Connell got his first start for the Raiders. Both quarterbacks delivered victories for their teams. But before we get to those games let’s talk about the game in Frankfurt, Germany featuring the Dolphins vs Chiefs.

The Dolphins offense couldn’t generate any offense. They finally came alive in the third quarter but a fourth quarter fumble killed any chance for a comeback. Conversely the Chiefs offense disappeared in the second half, failing to generate any points. However, they held on for the win. Patrick Mahomes told Peter King post-game, “We’ve got a lot to clean up on offense, we know that and we’ll continue to work.” As for the Dolphins, they are 0-3 against teams over .500. For both teams the defenses are doing their parts but the offenses need to continue to improve going forward.

It was a back and forth battle between the Vikings and Falcons. The Vikings had two fumbles, one in the 2nd and another in the 3rd quarter resulting in field goals for the Falcons. However, that didn’t stop them from fighting. With :22 left in the game, Dobbs connected with Brandon Powell for the go-ahead touchdown. It was a nailbiter down to the end and the kind of game that makes football so much fun. There was a big hug exchanged between head coach Kevin O’Connell and Joshua Dobbs after the touchdown. No doubt both men heaved a sigh of relief.

Big Changes And Big Wins Headlined Week 9

There were nothing but punts in the first quarter of the Seahawks @ Ravens. Then Baltimore went on a scoring spree and the Seahawks couldn’t stop them. In the end it was a 3-37 blowout and the Ravens keep on rolling. Seattle will have to go back to the drawing board and regroup. And on the subject of blowouts, the Cleveland Browns demolished the Arizona Cardinals 0-27. Rookie QB Clayton Tune had his first start and it wasn’t good. An interception and a fumble by the Cardinals both led to touchdowns for the Browns. Had the Cardinals defense not played hard the outcome could have been much worse.

The LA Rams were without QB Matthew Stafford and lost to the Green Bay Packers, 3-20. Four year veteran Brett Rypien got his fourth career start as quarterback. But the Rams weren’t able to have much success. On the other hand, Green Bay allowed four sacks and threw two interceptions but still got the win. No word yet on if Stafford will play the next game. Trending in the wrong direction is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, losing a close one to Houston, 37-39. Head coach Todd Bowles has his work cut out.

New England lost to the Washington Commanders 20-17. The Chicago Bears lost to the New Orleans Saints 17-24. Both losing teams are 2-7 and there doesn’t appear to be much hope for improvement. At this point I’m not expecting much. The only other team worse than them is the 1-7 Carolina Panthers. They lost 27-13 to the Indianapolis Colts. In contrast, the 8-1 Eagles beat their division rival, Dallas Cowboys. Dak Prescott played well and so did Jalen Hurts. But the Eagles made more plays and the Cowboys began to fade somewhat in the second half.

Other News and Notes

Congratulations to the whole Raiders organization for getting a big win over the New York Giants, 6-30. Whenever, a head coach and GM are fired it causes ripples. However, in this case the change obviously gave a spark to the team. Of course it’s only one win but it keeps them in second place in their division. And speaking of upward trends, the Bengals look like a renewed team. Joe Burrows had a good game and looks more like his old self. Josh Allen also played well and is the most elusive QB to be such a big guy. However, his efforts weren’t enough to get the win, losing 18-24 to the Bengals.

It was an exciting week of action and we have one more game to go. Tonight will be the 3-4 Chargers @ Jets 4-3. The Jets are finding ways to win. We’ll see if they can pull off a victory at home.
