Battle for AFC Number One Seed Heats Up

Battle for AFC Number One Seed Heats Up!

This is the kind of football we LIVE for. Intense matchups, 60 minutes of pure action and adrenaline; and a tight race for first place. This is exactly what we are witnessing in the American Football Conference side of the NFL standings. After some key Sunday matchups, the battle for the AFC number one seed is heating up.

There are three teams with at least eight wins for the season that are leading the way and the wolf pack. The Kansas Chiefs (AFC West), the Buffalo Bills (AFC East) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (AFC North). For those keeping track, the Chiefs now have a record of 9-1, the Bills are 9-2 and the Steelers are coming up strong at 8-2.

The Bills helped make this AFC race even more interesting this week by defeating the Chiefs. Kansas City had been on an insane victory run; winning games since Christmas of 2023. But Buffalo brought the “W’s” to a stop, beating the Chiefs 21-30 thanks to an incredible 4th quarter offensive effort by quarterback Josh Allen; who ran in a 26 yard touchdown. Nevertheless, not only did the Bills hand Kansas City their first loss of the season, but this particular win helped them pull closer to the Chiefs in vying for the top AFC spot.

Moreover, being in the top spot has its advantages and benefits. Which is why teams want it. As NBC explains, “The number one seed, meaning the winningest team, from each conference, gets not only an automatic playoff berth, but the coveted position of skipping the first round entirely and sitting pretty in the second round, just waiting for their first opponent.

The Steelers being in the mix is another great story of the season. In the offseason, the franchise picks up QB Russell Wilson from the Denver Broncos, but Wilson deals with an injury right smack at the beginning of the season. However, backup Justin Fields steps in beautifully keeping Pittsburgh in good shape.

Coach Tomlin then makes the decision to switch to Wilson after he heals up and now Russell is 4-0. Helping the Steelers stay on the heels of Buffalo and the Chiefs. Thus, the QB move was a very good decision on the part of Tomlin.

So then, with week 12 being almost upon us. Look for things to only intensify. The Baltimore Ravens (7-4), a franchise in the same division as the Steelers are not far behind Pittsburgh in terms of record. Therefore, there’s not much room for error in the AFC North. Each week matters.

But the Chiefs and Bills have a tad more breathing room in their respective divisions. KC has a two game lead over the Los Angeles Chargers; after LA beat Cincinnati and moved to 7-3. And the Bills have a 5 game lead over the Miami Dolphins. So it’s time to strap in and lock in everyone; this is about to be a real wild ride.
