Barry Bonds Most Home Runs Before All Star Week Record—Cal Raleigh Gave It A Go

Barry Bonds Most Home Runs Before All Star Break Record—Cal Raleigh Gave It A Go

As All-Star festivities inch closer and closer. There is one record that looks as though it shall remain intact. And that is the Barry Bonds most home runs before All Star Break record which was set over two decades ago.

Many players have tried to break it. Many have come close to getting it. However, Bonds set the bar extremely high and it will remain that way at least for another season.

The Seattle Mariners’ Cal Raleigh had a good home run pace going this year. So far, he has hit an astounding 35 out of the park dingers. Currently, Cal Raleigh is on pace to hit around 63-66 home runs this season. This pace would break the American League single-season home run record of 62, set by Aaron Judge in 2022. He is having a historic season, tying the Mariners’ pre-All-Star break record for home runs previously held by Ken Griffey Jr.

So then, even though Raleigh is not likely to reach Barry Bonds. Cal still has plenty to smile about. And brag about if he so chooses to do so this season.

Nevertheless, just how many home runs did Bonds hit before All Stars back in 2001? Well, Barry hit a whopping 39 home runs! Wild. About this record, Major League Baseball reminisces,

“The record for most homers before the All-Star break is 39 set by Barry Bonds in 2001. Bonds, of course, set the home run record that season with 73. Raleigh is now on pace for 66.

The previous home-run record was 70 set by Mark McGwire in 1998 in that epic back-and-forth season in which he went toe-to-toe with Sammy Sosa, who finished with 66, as both surpassed the previous record of 61 set by Roger Maris in 1961. On June 22 of that ’98 season — — McGwire had 33 and Sosa had 30.”

Great bit of history right there. Nevertheless, this season the Top 5 HR MLB leaders have hit at least 27:

  • Cal Raleigh (35)
  • Aaron Judge (33)
  • Shohei Ohtani (30)
  • Eugenio Suarez (28)
  • Kyle Schwarber (27)

As you can see, once more a few guys came close. But Bonds survives another season on top. Now, we can kick back and watch to see if Cal Raleigh wins the 2025 Home Run Derby; and if he breaks the single-season home run record.
