Baltimore Ravens Trade For WR Diontae Johnson
As the trade deadline looms there are still plenty of transactions taking place. Last night we learned that the Baltimore Ravens did a trade for WR Diontae Johnson with the Carolina Panthers. The trade is a pick-swap, with Baltimore sending a 2025 fifth-round pick to Carolina for Johnson and a sixth-rounder, per Rapoport and Garafolo. According to Jeff Zrebiec, “Per sources, the Panthers are also paying down some of his salary. So Ravens will owe him about $625K rest of year.”
So the Ravens did not have to give up much to add a receiving weapon. The Ravens’ offense has already had tremendous success this season. QB Lamar Jackson has had plenty of weapons at his disposal: Zay Flowers, Isaiah Likely, Mark Andrews and Derrick Henry. Adding Johnson is just more icing on the cake. Also, in relation to the trade, the Ravens have placed nose tackle Michael Pierce on injured reserve. The veteran run stopper will be out of action for at least the next four games. Baltimore used Pierce’s 53-man roster spot to add wide receiver Diontae Johnson.
Another bonus for adding Johnson to the roster are his return skills. The Ravens have not fared well in the return game. Johnson has experience as a returner and could be used on special teams as well. While with Carolina his production notably improved once Andy Dalton took over as the starting quarterback instead of Bryce Young. Jonas Shaffer provided a breakdown:
Diontae Johnson with Bryce Young passing:
0.64 yards per route run
-0.85 EPA per target 41.7%
catch rate 8.5 receiving yards per game
Diontae Johnson with Andy Dalton passing:
2.17 yards per route run 0.05
EPA per target 54.3%
catch rate 53.8 receiving yards per game
With Lamar Jackson throwing to him now, his production will surely increase. Although, he’ll have to share with his other talented receiving teammates.
Baltimore Ravens Trade For WR Diontae Johnson
Johnson has been traded twice this year. He landed in Carolina via a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers for cornerback Donte Jackson. While with the Steelers he caught 391 passes for 4,363 yards and 25 touchdowns. Prior to being traded to the Ravens, Johnson had been the Panthers top wide receiver. In seven games with the Panthers he had 30 receptions, 357 yards and 3 touchdowns. Johnson is known to be a hard worker who likes to get the ball a lot. Yet, he may not get it as much as he would like in Baltimore. But having several options at receiver is never a bad thing.
Now if the Ravens could work on shoring up their defense this team could be unstoppable.
