Baltimore Ravens Giving Extension To Head Coach John Harbaugh
He’s been one of the most successful head coaches in the history of the NFL. And his tenure in Baltimore is currently the second longest at 17 years. Right behind the head coach of their division rival Pittsburgh Steelers’ head coach Mike Tomlin at 18 years. Nevertheless, the Baltimore Ravens are giving a three year extension to head coach John Harbaugh. With the new extension, Harbaugh will be linked to the Ravens through 2028. Harbaugh joined the team back in 2008 and appears to still have plenty left in his tank.
ESPN Ravens reporter Jamison Hensley brought out an interesting fact about Harbaugh’s time with the Ravens. He writes, “Harbaugh, 62, was entering the final year of his current contract. The Ravens have never let him start a regular season on the final year of his contract since he was hired in 2008.” Not only is that incredible but it shows how committed the team has been to keeping their Super Bowl winning coach. Surely other coaches would love to have that kind of regular support.
Under his leadership he has built the Ravens into one of the league’s powerhouses. The team’s website explained the postseason success that he brought to the Ravens, saying:
“He is one of just five coaches in league history to lead his team to the postseason at least 12 times over his first 17 seasons, joining Pete Carroll, Bud Grant, Mike Holmgren, and Mike McCarthy, who all also did it 12 times.”
But he’s not satisfied to sit and rest on his laurels, instead he is looking to get back to the big game and win his second Super Bowl. If he can do that it would be the third Super Bowl for the team. The first Super Bowl XXXV victory was January 28, 2001, handily beating the New York Giants 34-7. And the second was Super Bowl XLVII on February 3, 2013 winning 34-31 against the San Francisco 49ers.
Baltimore Ravens Giving Extension To Head Coach John Harbaugh
Being a head coach is a demanding job to say the least and it’s not going to get any easier. He’ll have to face the formidable Cincinnati Bengals twice a year. And the Bengals gifted quarterback Joe Burrow with his two favorite weapons, Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase. Also, the Ravens have had to deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. They got as far as the AFC title game in 2023 before losing to the eventual repeat champion Chiefs. And last season Baltimore lost to the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional Round.
So clearly, Harbaugh will have some hurdles to clear to get back to the Super Bowl. But the organization has proven, with the extension, that he has their confidence to make it happen.
