Baltimore Orioles Relieved Manager Brandon Hyde Of His Duties

Baltimore Orioles Relieved Manager Brandon Hyde Of His Duties

He joined the organization in December of 2018 just one month after the new general manager was brought onboard. Together they were expected to help the team rise from the ashes so to speak. They had been losing for a long time and wanted to turn things around. It took some time but eventually things greatly improved but the improvement didn’t last. So today the Baltimore Orioles relieved manager Brandon Hyde of his duties. The announcement came after the Orioles sloppy loss to the Washington Nationals on Friday.

Players were made aware of the firing by general manager Mike Elias on Saturday morning when they arrived at the ballpark. A statement was released by Elias about the firing:

“As the head of baseball operations, the poor start to our season is ultimately my responsibility,” Elias said in a statement. “Part of that responsibility is pursuing difficult changes in order to set a different course for the future.

“I want to thank Brandon for his hard work, dedication and passion all these years, and for returning the team to the playoffs and winning an AL East championship. His many positive contributions to this organization and to Baltimore will remain, and we wish he and his family the best.”

Included in their house cleaning was field coordinator/catching instructor Tim Cossins. Tony Mansolino, the O’s third-base coach, will serve as interim manager moving forward.

During his tenure, Hyde had a rough go of it to begin with going 131-253 (.341) in his first three seasons. But things got better with the 2022 season as the team finished strong en route to an 83-79 record. More success came when they went an American League-best 101-61 in 2023, winning their first AL East title since ‘14, with Hyde being named AL Manager of the Year. 2024 saw them reach the postseason again, earning an AL Wild Card berth.

However, the 2025 season has not gone according to plan and the Orioles currently sit in last place in their division at 15-29. And so David Rubenstein, who became owner/control person of the club in March 2024 echoed Elias statement: He said:

“I am sincerely grateful for his significant accomplishments over the past six years, which have greatly benefited both the Orioles and the city of Baltimore.

“However, as is sometimes the case in baseball, change becomes necessary, and we believe this is one of those moments. The Orioles organization is truly appreciative of everything Brandon has contributed during his tenure, and we wish him nothing but success in whatever path he chooses next in the world of baseball.

“Brandon is a man of great character, and we thank him for his dedication and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

Hyde is the third MLB manager to be fired this season, as Derek Shelton (Pirates) and Bud Black (Rockies) were also let go by their respective clubs. Therefore, the club is moving forward under the guidance of Mansolino who has been Baltimore’s third-base coach since 2021.
