Aztec Basketball Star Jaedon LeDee Named To AP All-American Team

Mark Zeigler of the San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting that Jaedon LeDee has been named an Associated Press All-American, making him the 4th San Diego State Aztecs player to enjoy such an honor in the history of the program.

Who are the others?

Michael Cage (1984)

Kawhi Leonard (2011)

Malachi Flynn (2020)

…all of whom made second team and eventually played in the NBA.

The only bummer is that LeDee made 3rd team All-American instead of first or second  team.

LeDee just missed the 2nd team, in fact, other media outlets have him listed on their second teams.

LeDee is the top vote getter on the AP third team.  Other players on the AP third team are:

Arizona’s Caleb Love,

Auburn’s Johni Broome,

Creighton’s Baylor Scheierman

and llinois’ Terrence Shannon Jr.

San Diego State Aztec Basketball Star Jaedon LeDee Named To AP All-American Team

Last season, LeDee came off the bench for a loaded and veteran Aztecs team after transferring over from Texas Christian University and taking a redshirt year.  Coming off the bench he averaged 7.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in 18 minutes a game, helping the Aztecs make it all the way to the NCAA title game.

This year LeDee had a breakout season nearly tripling his points per game to 21.1 and snagged 8.4 rebounds in 32.7 minutes per game

Why is LeDee just now getting the chance to recognized as the star player that he is?  Aztecs Coach Brian Dutcher explained in an interview with CBS Sports:

“I think I held Jaedon back to a large degree last year, His sit-out year, he was fantastic in practice and we thought, ‘How are we ever going to keep him out of the starting lineup?’ And then it just worked out with the veterans we had back, he came off the bench. And I had Matt Bradley, who was a volume shooter, a volume hands-on-the-ball player, so Jaedon had to take a secondary role.

“He was ready for his moment. I let him play free offensively. He’s not a back-to-the-basket guy, although he scores with his back to the basket. He shoots the 3, he shoots the mid-range, and then he attacks off the dribble. Jaedon is very versatile and very talented.”
