Atlanta Falcons Named Michael Penix Jr Their Starting Quarterback
We were wondering if it was going to happen before the season ends. Given the struggle he was having at the position it seemed likely a change would be needed. Today the change happened as the Atlanta Falcons have named Michael Penix Jr. their starting quarterback. Earlier today Falcons head coach Raheem Morris held his weekly day-after press conference virtually. At that time he made the following remarks:
“We didn’t play particularly well at the quarterback position,” Morris said. “We didn’t play well (Monday) at that spot. We got to play better. I think that’s the thing that’s got to be put out there, that we got to play better, and that’s the thing that’s got to be addressed. This thing’s got to happen in order for us to find ways to win versus our next opponent, which is the New York Giants.”
The game against the Raiders yesterday was the first time the Falcons fell below 100 yards passing in a single contest this season. Cousins completed 11 of his 17 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. The passing touchdown marked his first since the third quarter of the Nov. 3 win against the Dallas Cowboys; 17 quarters of work had passed. On Monday night, he was intercepted once, which is his fifth consecutive game with a pick. So it’s not surprising that Morris said that they have to play better, that has to be addressed.
Following the press conference later tonight the team released a statement:
“After review we have made the decision Michael Penix will be the Atlanta Falcons starting quarterback moving forward,” head coach Raheem Morris said in the statement. “This was a football decision and we are fully focused on preparing the team for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.”

When the Falcons drafted Penix No. 8 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft it wasn’t to take over the offense. The plan was for him to develop behind Cousins. “We talked about bringing in Kirk, giving us an immediate chance to win, and then we talked about going out and finding a young quarterback that’s going to take us to the future,” Morris said. “You could never say there’s a downfall to turning it over to somebody that you put a lot of investment into. We’re going to do whatever’s best for us to win as many games we can win this season.”
Per Adam Schefter, “The Falcons signed Kirk Cousins to a 4-year, $180M contract this offseason with $90M fully-guaranteed. He will head to the bench after starting just 14 games.” I’m hoping Penix has learned enough to get the job done.
