Atlanta Falcons Imposed Their Will On Minnesota Vikings On Sunday Night Football
Two young quarterbacks with big potential battled it out on Sunday night in Minnesota. One, J.J. McCarthy missed his entire rookie season due to injury. The other, Michael Penix, was given the starting job late last season after the play of Kirk Cousins fell off. And they met each other in the 2024 CFP National Championship as starting quarterbacks. But tonight was their first professional confrontation. In a show of dominance the Atlanta Falcons imposed their will on the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football.
The Falcons came out running with Bijan Robinson getting big chunks of yardage. But once they got into the red zone the crowd noise really affected the offense. They were forced to call a timeout to avoid a delay of game. But on the next play the same thing happened and they backed themselves up with a delay of game penalty. So they had to settle for a 38-yard field goal. The Vikings came out with another slow start like they did last week. On their first possession of the game they turned the ball over on downs.
On the Falcons next possession they had a lot of incomplete passes resulting in them having to kick another field goal. Some of the passes were just drops and others were off the mark. Nevertheless they managed to get the 29-yard field goal. Meanwhile after a couple of runs J.J. McCarthy was sacked for 9 yards and the Vikings had to punt. But things didn’t go any better for the Falcons after Drake London caught a pass. The ball was punched out and recovered by the Vikings leading to their first score of the game. A 33-yard field goal.
Overall the first half seemed to be marked by young quarterback mistakes. Such as not feeling or seeing the pressure brought by the opposing defense. And turnovers were a problem for both teams. Nevertheless, Atlanta went into halftime with a 9-6 lead over the Vikings. Thanks in large part due to the hard running of Bijan Robinson.

The second half produced more field goals by both teams. Neither team could seem to do much once they got into the red zone or they couldn’t get to the red zone at all. Wide receiver Drake London had a dropped pass in the first half and was subsequently ignored. However, in the fourth quarter Penix finally brought London back into the game throwing him the ball twice for a total of 31 yards. It was on that drive that the Falcons finally scored a touchdown.
It was a tough night for the Vikings on both sides of the ball and there would be no miraculous comeback like last week. Atlanta cruised to a 22-6 victory over the home team. However, the Vikings are still a good team and they were down a couple of offensive linemen, Christian Darrisaw and Matt Nelson. Justin Skule filled in for Darrisaw and he left the game with a concussion.
But it was still a great week for McCarthy who two days ago welcomed his new baby boy to the world.
