Atlanta Braves Sign OF Jurickson Profar to 3-Year $42 Million Deal—Official Team Statement

The Braves wanted some outfield help and they are going to get it. On Thursday, it was announced that the Atlanta Braves signed OF Jurickson Profar to 3-Year $42 million deal. Profar had an outstanding 2024 season with the San Diego Padres; so of course, it made teams take notice.

For the Braves, this is a good signing. Especially, with the amount of injuries that they have had to deal with in the outfield. Jurickson plays very good defense so he definitely adds strength to the team in that regard.

Plus, Profar also showed much improvement offensively last year. Due to such refinement, Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos says Jurickson Profar was rated as their second highest free agent on the market. He says they liked the swing improvements Profar made coming into last season. Specifically, Jurickson’s lower half/leg kick/opened up stance that led to career bests in exit velocity and home runs. Anthopoulos feels Profar is a perfect fit for the current roster; additionally, the Braves see his 2024 production as sustainable and what he did last year is who he’ll be moving forward.

In 2024, Atlanta finished the regular season with 89 wins. Good enough to get into the postseason. However, they would like to go much deeper than just the wildcard. Which is why they are working to shore up some holes and making some moves; such as grabbing up Jurickson.

The Braves released a statement explaining the financial details of Profar’s contract and why they selected him to be a member of their organization based on his performance, experience and stats. Atlanta says,

“The Atlanta Braves today signed OF Jurickson Profar to a three-year major league contract worth $42 million, with the outfielder set to make $12 million in 2025 and $15 million in each of the following two seasons. Profar has agreed to donate 1% of his salary to the Atlanta Braves Foundation.

Profar, 31, batted .280/.380/.459 over 158 games with the San Diego Padres last season, setting career-high totals in all three triple-slash categories as well as hits (158), runs (94), home runs (24) and RBI (85). He started in left field for the N.L. All-Star team, the first such honor of his career, and garnered his first Silver Slugger award following the season. Profar earned a 14th-place finish in N.L.

MVP voting, and his 4.3 fWAR were most by a primary left fielder in the National League. Profar ranked in the 90th percentile or better across baseball in expected batting average (92nd, .282), expected weighted on-base average (92nd, .364), chase percentage (90th, 21.9%) and whiff percentage (90th, 17.0%).

The 6-foot-0, 184-pound native of Willemstad, Curacao, has batted 245/331/.395 over an 11-year major league career, with 111 home runs and 444 RBI over 1,119 games. Profar has appeared defensively at every position around the diamond except for pitcher and catcher, compiling 549 games in the outfield (499 in left, 33 in right and 21 in center), 219 games at second, 104 at shortstop, 89 at third base and 72 at first. A veteran of nine postseason series, he has hit .258/.340/292 over 27 career playoff games, including an appearance in the NLCS in 2022.

Originally signed by the Texas Rangers as a non-drafted free agent in 2009, Profar was rated as the No. 1 prospect in baseball prior to the 2013 season by Major League Baseball, Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus. He debuted with the Rangers in 2012 and played five years with the club, and has also appeared with the Athletics (2019), Padres (2020-24) and Rockies (2023).

To make room on the 40-man roster, Atlanta designated INF Connor Gillespie for assignment.”

Well, while seeing Profar on the Padres was fun, it will be cool to watch him take the field for the Braves this year. The new season is quickly approaching. 2025 Spring Training will officially begin on Thursday, Feb. 20, as the Los Angeles Dodgers host the Chicago Cubs in Glendale, Ariz., to open the Cactus League.
