Atlanta Braves Named Walt Weiss as Their New Major League Manager

Atlanta needed a change. Baseball is a results based business and the manager carousel illustrates this point well. As the old goes out, the new blood flows in to take over the reins. That is exactly what occurred down in the ATL, the Atlanta Braves named Walt Weiss as their new Major League manager.

This change came to be in the works because the last couple of seasons have been disappointing for the franchise. In 2024 although they made the playoffs; they experienced an early exit at the hands of the San Diego Padres. In 2025, things got more bleak as Atlanta finished the regular season under .500, winning just 76 games.

This is certainly not the direction the Braves want to continue to head. In 2023 they had won over 100 games and they have a recent title under their belt.

The last time the Braves won the World Series was in 2021, when they defeated the Houston Astros 4-2. This was their first World Series championship since 1995.

So then, in hopes of getting back to winning; Atlanta made a change. The Braves organization is thrilled to now have Weiss handling managerial duties and released a statement regarding his new role. The ball club says,

“The Atlanta Braves named Walt Weiss as the 49th manager in franchise history after spending the previous eight seasons as the club’s major league bench coach. Weiss, who previously served as manager for the Colorado Rockies, has twice been a World Series champion: first as a player with the Oakland Athletics in 1989, then as the Braves’ bench coach in 2021.

Weiss, 61, has been a part of the Braves organization for 11 seasons as both a player and coach. He began his tenure as Atlanta’s bench coach in 2018, helping lead the club to a 680-513 record (.570), second-best in the National League and fourth-best in Major League Baseball. Since Weiss joined the staff, the Braves have made seven postseason appearances, earned six National League East division titles, and won the 2021 World Series. As a player for the Braves from 1998-2000, the former switch-hitting shortstop slashed .257/.354/.329 (210-for-818) and was named a starter for the National League at the Major League Baseball All-Star Game in 1998.

The Tuxedo, N.Y. native has spent 12 seasons on a major league coaching staff. He earned his first managerial appointment in 2013 with the Rockies, where he managed the team through the 2016 season. Preceding his time as the club’s manager, Weiss worked for the organization as a special assistant to the general manager from 2002-08.

Weiss was drafted out of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill by the Athletics in the first round (No. 11) of the 1985 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Over his 14 year MLB career, the 1988 American League Rookie of the Year posted a 16.5 bWAR and a 14.8 FWAR across 1,495 games with the Athletics (1987-92), Florida Marlins (1993), Rockies (1994-97) and Braves.”

Nice. As one can see, Weiss has numerous accomplishments and accolades. But next year we get to see how he leads the Braves. Congratulations to Walt Weiss and look forward to watching him in action in 2026.
