As The New England Patriots Struggle Is It Time For A QB Change

Their season got off to a good start with a win over the Cincinnati Bengals. However, the Bengals themselves just got their first win of the season last week. So maybe the Patriots win over them wasn’t a big deal. However, they have looked worse as the season has progressed. So as the New England Patriots continue to struggle some wonder is it time for a QB change. Veteran and former Patriot, Jacoby Brissett was named the starter at the beginning of the season.

Some liked the idea of letting the first round draft pick QB Drake Maye watch and learn. Others thought he should play right away and let him learn on the job. In any case, as we head into the Week 5 games Brissett remains the starter. And he’s had a rough time trying to operate behind what could be the worst offensive line in the league. And to make matters worse, 10-year veteran center and team captain David Andrews is expected to be out for the rest of the season.

He’ll need shoulder surgery after sustaining an injury in the game against the 49ers. He’s one of the last players remaining from the 2015 and 2017 Super Bowl-winning Patriots. So his leadership will be missed by a young, inexperienced o-line. Brissett said Andrews was one of the reasons he wanted to return to the Patriots.

“It’s tough. That one hurt me. One of the key reasons why I wanted to come back here is because of my past relationship with him. It’s tough when a guy like that goes down because he’s not going down for anything minor,” he said.

So then would now really be a good time for Drake Maye to step into the role of starting quarterback?

Former Patriot James White definitely doesn’t think so due to the Patriots offensive line:

“Everybody calling for Maye to get in there… I’m sure Jacoby (Brissett) missed some throws, I’m sure he’s scrambled when he probably shouldn’t have. But, that’s what happens when nobody’s blocking up front — you don’t trust it! You don’t trust it. Y’all think you gonna throw a rookie out there and he just gonna go out there and shred it up and handle business? I don’t think so. Your best offensive lineman David Andrews got hurt… you’re playing with a lot of backups up front… I don’t see why anybody’s tryna say Drake Maye needs to go out there and play. It’s just too much going on.”

So I guess the answer to the question is a resounding no!
