Artistic Swimming Drought For USA Ended With A Silver Medal
What used to be known as synchronized swimming is now called artistic swimming. And the artistic swimming drought for USA ended with a silver medal. At the Paris Olympics a change was introduced in which the team event would have three sessions. The program already included the technical and free portions and now includes the acrobatic routine. The team event is determined by the total of the scores from the three routines.
So what’s involved with the acrobatic routine? The acrobatic routine, “challenges judges to identify and evaluate difficulty, execution and artistic impression of complex structures, airborne movements and a wide diversity of acrobatic action combinations”, explains World Aquatics.
Now that we have all that out of the way we can talk about the actual event. And the competition was fierce was on all levels. The costumes were glitzy and glamorous, the level of strength and athleticism was off the charts, and the artistry was beautifully choreographed. Team USA was top notch with their routine which was jam packed with difficult moves and platforms.
The fact that team USA did so well in this Olympics is surprising. Coach Andrea Fuentes took over the struggling program in 2018. Fuentes is a three-time Olympian from Spain. She brought a freer, more positive leadership approach to the program. Her goal was to turn her swimmers into into medal contenders by the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.
Well with their silver medal finish yesterday they blew past all expectations. During the acrobatic portion of the event the team performed Michael Jackson’s famous moonwalk underwater. Only their legs, from their knees to their feet were above the surface. It was so smooth it was criminal, yes pun intended. Just enjoy it on as many levels as I did.
Artistic Swimming Drought For USA Ended With A Silver Medal
It hasn’t been an easy journey for Team USA.
“We’ve had a crazy two years,” veteran swimmer Anita Alvarez said. “The way this team has been able to adapt to all the challenges, all the adversity we’ve faced, has just made us so strong.”
But thanks to their hard work and determination they were able to do something historic. With a silver in the team event, the U.S. artistic swimming team earned their first Olympic medal since Athens 2004. Thus ending a 20 year drought in the sport.
All I can say is, it’s a good thing they were performing in water because they were fire. Bring on the 2028 games!
