They lost their starting quarterback Kyler Murray Week 5 due to a foot injury. Backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett did a decent job in his stead but his efforts weren’t enough. But there were also other issues that the team had to face. So as a result the Arizona Cardinals joined in the fray as they have moved on from Jonathan Gannon. He was hired as the head coach on Feb. 14, 2023 after losing Super Bowl LVII with the Philadelphia Eagles as their defensive coordinator.

The Cardinals were expected to do great things but the expectations didn’t pan out after their 3-14 season. Therefore, owner Michael Bidwill and General Manager Monti Ossenfort made the announcement about Gannon on Monday. In a statement on the team’s website, Bidwell said:

“(Gannon) made us better, but this is a league about wins and losses,” Bidwill said. “The wins and losses speak for themselves, especially this year. We felt we were going in the wrong direction and we needed to change course.”

And Ossenfort added his own comments, saying:

“None of us expected to be here today,” Ossenfort said. “We didn’t. It’s not just one thing. There are a lot of things we have to get moving in the right direction, and that starts (Monday).”

Both men gave credit to Gannon for building a culture in Arizona. But since they decided to let him go, what type of coach are they now looking for? According to Ossenfort, the Cardinals won’t necessarily be looking for an offensive or defensive head coach. He also didn’t want to get into exactly how the Kyler Murray situation might impact any hire or be resolved after a hire.

There were games that the Cardinals probably should have won and didn’t. But when the injuries started to pile up they didn’t seem to have any hope of winning their games. So now they sit with the third overall pick and pick in the top five of every round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Naturally, being in that position made them feel like it was time to go in a different direction with head coach.

Tight end Trey McBride expressed his feelings about the team saying:

“It’s a team game, so a lot of things went wrong,” tight end Trey McBride said. “Lose a couple close ones early and it was kind of a domino effect from there. Very frustrating season. At the same time, I have a lot of hope and excitement for next year.”

Owner Bidwell is also looking forward to the future noting that one or two years ago other teams made changes and are now in the playoffs this year. All of Arizona is hoping those positive results will come to them next season.
