Another Coach Gone As New York Giants Fired Defensive Coordinator Shane Bowen
They are not having a good year despite having been in the league for over 100 years. Earlier this season, former head coach Brian Daboll was relieved of his duties. Mike Kafka was made the interim head coach. Now Kafka has made a decision regarding the defensive side of the ball. As such, another coach is gone as the New York Giants have fired defensive coordinator Shane Bowen. It was Daboll who had brought in Bowen to the Giants’ organization and now they’re both gone.
Speaking on the matter, interim coach Mike Kafka made it known that linebackers coach Charlie Bullen would be the interim DC stating:
“Made the tough decision today to let Shane go as our defensive coordinator,” Kafka told reporters on Monday morning. “I got a lot of faith in Charlie. Obviously, these decisions aren’t easy, and Shane’s a good person, a good man, a good coach. Just the results weren’t what we wanted them to be. Charlie’s going to step up for us and rally the group.”
Kafka did confirm to reporters that the firing was his decision. But he had also consulted with general manager Joe Schoen prior to firing Bowen and replacing him with Bullen. Although when he was initially appointed the interim head coach, Kafka had expressed having a lot of confidence in Bowen. However, after some time passing by and reviewing tape, Kafka felt that now was the right time to make the decision on firing Bowen.
One of Bowen’s cardinal sins was the giving up of leads and losing games in the end. His defense was ranked 30th overall this season, allowing 385 yards per game and 27.8 points. Yesterday’s loss to the Giants was the final nail in the coffin. In overtime, the defense allowed running back extraordinaire Jahmyr Gibbs to run for a 69-yard touchdown, sealing their loss.

When it comes to losing leads the Giants are 2-5. They have blown five fourth-quarter leads of 10-plus points this season. Last month they became the first team since at least 1970 to lead by 18-plus points with six minutes remaining and lose in regulation. In yesterday’s game, the Giants defense gave up three of the Lions’ four touchdown drives with three plays or fewer.
Clearly, a lot of help is needed on the defensive side of the ball. At this point in the season what can be done to help the defense? We can be sure that Bullen has his hands full trying to get the defense to preserve the leads built by the offense. Hopefully he can do that for the remainder of the season. At any rate, yesterday, the Giants were eliminated from playoff contention.
